Follow the classic seven-day Machame camping route from Moshi, with proper overnight stops at Shira and Karanga for acclimatisation before Barafu summit camp. You cross rainforest, the Shira Plateau, Barranco Wall, and alpine desert on the way to Uhuru Peak.
Daily walking ranges from four to eight hours with summit day the longest, and camp life becomes part of the fun with mess tent meals and teammates from around the world. The itinerary below lists each camp from Machame Gate through celebration at Mweka Gate after sunrise on the crater rim.
Our Machame teams know where to slow the group on the Barranco scramble and how to manage energy before summit night, with camp standards that repeat guests notice from year to year. From the pre-climb gear check through the tipping ceremony at Mweka Gate, you get clear English communication and consistent crew ratios.
We treat seven-day schedules as the sweet spot for first summit attempts, with briefings that explain fitness expectations so you arrive prepared for consecutive walking days at altitude rather than surprised on day three.
Meet your driver at JRO and transfer to Moshi for hotel check-in. The head guide inspects boots, layers, and sleeping bag before explaining the seven-day Machame schedule.
Use the evening to repack so your daypack carries only essentials on trail days.
Register at Machame Gate and hike through montane rainforest on a ridge path that can be muddy. Monkeys and birds are common before you reach the first tented camp.
Altitude gain is moderate today, making it a manageable opening stage.
Climb steeply onto the Shira Plateau with expanding views of Kibo's cone. Heather and volcanic rock replace forest as you camp on the open plateau.
Sun and wind both intensify here, so layer changes happen often.
Walk high to Lava Tower for acclimatisation lunch, then descend into Barranco Valley below the Great Wall. Giant groundsels frame camp in a dramatic amphitheatre setting.
This classic climb-high sleep-low day underpins seven-day Machame success rates.
Scramble the Barranco Wall in morning light, then traverse to Karanga for lunch and a shorter afternoon. Glacier views reward the wall climb.
Rest hydrates you before the push to Barafu tomorrow.
Alpine desert walking leads to Barafu Base Camp by mid-afternoon. Organise summit kit, eat early dinner, and sleep before the midnight alarm.
Cold wind picks up as you near base camp, so down jackets stay close.
Ascend scree in darkness to Stella Point and Uhuru Peak at sunrise, then descend via Barafu to forested Mweka Camp. It is the longest emotional day of the trek.
Guides watch fatigue on scree because slips happen when concentration drops.
Rainforest walk to Mweka Gate for certificates and crew celebration, then transfer to Moshi. Departure day includes breakfast and JRO transfer when your flight schedule requires it.
Celebrate slowly; legs deserve rest before long flights home.
Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where your driver meets you and takes you to your hotel in Moshi, about an hour away. Your lead guide runs a briefing and gear check that evening, looking closely at boots, rain gear, and your sleeping bag, and you have time to repack so your daypack carries only what you need on the trail.
On the first trekking morning we drive roughly 45 minutes west of Moshi to Machame Gate, where you register at the park office and start walking up through the rainforest. Seven days later you come down to Mweka Gate, a short drive above Moshi, for your certificate and the crew celebration before we take you back to town. On departure day, an included transfer takes you back to JRO.
Classic seven-day Machame camping means a new tent site most nights from Machame Camp through Shira, Barranco, Karanga, and Barafu before the long descent to Mweka. Crew pitch guest tents and a mess tent, supply sleeping mats, and prepare meals while porters leapfrog your duffel between camps on the southern circuit.
Bring a sleeping bag rated to about -10C and keep valuables in your daypack during walking days. Karanga's extra night helps you rest before Barafu, yet summit night still demands warm layers inside the tent because wind whips across alpine desert camps after sunset.
Machame's variety of terrain rewards guests who pack thoughtfully for rain, sun, and summit cold in one week. Waterproof hiking boots, trekking poles, thermal base layers, fleece, down jacket, waterproof shell and trousers, -10C sleeping bag, and a reliable headlamp are non-negotiable for safe summit night and the steep Mweka descent.
Karanga's extra night helps acclimatisation but summit day remains exhausting, so pack snacks you can eat when appetite drops at altitude. Break in boots on hills at home before flying; Machame's stone steps are unforgiving on stiff new soles.
Seven days include overnight stops at Shira and Karanga that compressed schedules skip, giving your body more time to adjust before Barafu. Machame scenery stays spectacular throughout rainforest, plateau, and Barranco stages.
If you have limited time, our six-day Machame option exists, but this itinerary is the better choice for first-time high-altitude trekkers.
Machame is a trekking route with a hands-on Barranco scramble that does not use ropes. Summit night is steep scree walking in the dark with guides setting team pace.
Balance and confidence on uneven ground help, but no prior rock climbing training is required.
Tents, mess tent, sleeping mats, and kitchen gear are carried and set up by porters. You provide sleeping bag, clothing, and personal items in your duffel.
Daypacks should hold water, snacks, rain layer, and camera while porters move main luggage between camps.
Park conservation, camping, and rescue fees are payable at Machame Gate under current Tanzania National Parks tariffs.
Guides assist with registration paperwork so gate formalities run smoothly on your first morning.
You leave Barafu around midnight for hot drinks and a slow climb up volcanic scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. After sunrise you continue to Uhuru Peak before descending to Mweka Camp.
Expect twelve to fifteen hours on your feet including rest breaks, making it the most demanding day of the week.
Train with hills, stairs, and consecutive long walks for eight weeks before travel. Seven-day Machame still involves multi-hour days at increasing altitude.
Guests who already enjoy weekend hiking adapt faster than those who only gym train without outdoor mileage.
Waterproof boots, thermal layers, fleece, down jacket, rain pants, hat, gloves, headlamp, and -10C sleeping bag cover essentials. Trekking poles reduce knee strain on summit descent.
Pack camera batteries in an inner pocket on summit night because cold air drains power quickly.
We strongly recommend policies covering trekking to 6,000 metres, medical evacuation, and trip interruption. Kilimanjaro rescue without insurance is financially risky.
Buy suitable cover before purchasing flights and keep policy numbers accessible during the trek.
Tips for guides, cooks, and porters are customary at trek end. Briefing explains typical contribution ranges based on group size and trek length.
Many teams pool USD at Mweka Gate during the certificate ceremony on the final mountain day.
Minimum group size is one person and solo hikers can join group departures or private climbs. Tent sharing follows camp arrangements unless you request a private tent upgrade where available.
Private Machame dates suit travellers who want full control over pacing and start dates.
