Discover the thrill of coasteering at Gara Rock in South Devon, an adventure that promises to be one of the most exhilarating natural experiences in the region. Perfect for adrenaline seekers, Gara Rock Coasteering offers an unforgettable day out, combining wild swimming, cliff jumping, and rocky scrambles in a stunning coastal setting. Ideal for adventurous couples, groups, and families with older children, this activity is all about exploring dramatic coastlines, hidden coves, and breathtaking landscapes.
Your coasteering adventure at Gara Rock begins in the Gara Rock field car park.
From there, you'll be greeted by our friendly, experienced instructors who will equip you with all the necessary gear.
Expect to wild swim through natural canyons, climb rocky outcrops, and leap from ledges against the backdrop of one of Devon's most stunning locations.
We tailor the activity to your group's preferences, offering everything from serene explorations of channels and caves to adrenaline-pumping jumps and swims in challenging swells.
We will meet at the Gara Rock field car park, opposite the Gara Rock Hotel. Please note that there is a £2 parking fee (cash only) should you park a car here. Walk toward the sea and you will find our team.
Given Gara Rock's secluded location and the potential for busy roads in peak season, we recommend allowing ample travel time or opting for the passenger ferry from Salcombe to East Portlemouth, followed by a scenic 20-minute walk.
Participants should have a good level of fitness and be prepared for physical activity. No prior coasteering experience is needed, but a sense of adventure is a must! All equipment is provided, though you'll need to bring your own sturdy shoes.
Choosing us for your Gara Rock coasteering adventure means opting for an experience that's both safe and thrilling. Our guides are not only experienced but deeply passionate about sharing the beauty and excitement of South Devon's coastline. With a commitment to tailored adventures, we ensure that every participant gets the most out of their day.

Because you’ll be covered from head to toe in neoprene and have a high-quality buoyancy aid, you’ll float really well. If you are a complete novice to swimming (literally cannot swim, especially in open water) we’d recommend joining us on our Salcombe Coasteering Experience first where the water is more sheltered, there is less swimming involved, and plenty of places to get out. If you are interested in this, please take a look at it at the bottom of this page and book onto a session.
In a nutshell, no! The big attraction of coasteering is definitely the jumping aspect, however, there is so much more to explore with coasteering than just the jumping. We don’t pressure anyone into doing anything they don’t want to, it’s all challenge by choice, as we like to say, and jumping is always optional.
We highly recommend that you bring a pair of trainers/walking shoes and that they have laces and a good sole, and they are not completely ruined already. Because of the nature of the environment, we’ll be traversing over uneven rocky ground which is sometimes slippery, a good pair of trainers or walking shoes will provide the best stability for these conditions. Neoprene rock shoes without laces or pull cords are not recommended.
Yes, absolutely you can. However, it must be a long sleeve wetsuit and ideally 5mm, especially if it's for a child.
Gara Rock requires a moderate - good level of fitness. From the car park, there is a 1k hike down to the start point, and a 2/3k hike along the stunning coastal path. Once you’re in the water depending on what the swell is doing that day will determine how physical the swim will be. If you have had any recent operations or have struggled with health problems recently, we’d recommend not coasteering until you’ve consulted a doctor.
Yes, be all means. However, we are not responsible for it at any point. We recommend a chest harness, and not jumping with it in your hand or attached to you.
Coasteering tops our list of activities for those in pursuit of an adrenaline-packed challenge. It involves navigating the coastline by climbing over rocks, leaping off cliffs and ledges, and swimming through the ocean's swell and various channels, among other thrilling experiences.
Absolutely! Children aged 6+ are welcome on our Salcombe Coasteering Experience. You can check that out and book at the bottom of this page.
