High-level surf sessions give young learners aged 7–16 the opportunity to tackle challenging waves under the guidance of a dedicated helper. Each session emphasises skill progression, wave control, and confidence, combining advanced coaching with safe, structured support. Children experience fast repetition and technical refinement in a controlled environment designed for growth and enjoyment.
Sessions begin with focused warm-ups covering balance activation, paddle positioning, and breath rhythm to prepare for faster, more powerful waves. Helpers stay close as the child enters the water, supporting safe starts while the coach introduces technical goals such as sharper rail engagement, tighter bottom turns, and more decisive cutbacks. Manoeuvres and Manoeuvres+ waves help young surfers refine lines, generate speed, and practise linking multiple turns across the face of the wave.
As confidence builds, Barrels and High Performance waves provide steeper faces and faster sections that require precise timing. Children learn how to adjust stance, weight distribution, and entry angles to position themselves correctly in the pocket or barrel section. The helper continues to support balance and safety without interrupting the flow of the session, allowing each surfer to attempt more advanced techniques at a pace that suits them. By the end, most young riders show noticeable improvements in control, confidence, and adaptability while enjoying the fast repetition that the wave pool provides.
The venue is located in Newbridge, Edinburgh, within a 60-acre country park. Its inland wave pool produces thousands of consistent waves per hour, creating ideal conditions for repeated practice and skill development.
Facilities include indoor heated changing rooms, fully accessible toilets, and a fleet of plant-based wetsuits designed for comfort and mobility. Outdoor terraces and observation areas allow helpers, family, and friends to watch safely, maintaining a supportive atmosphere without disturbing the session. Easy access by car or public transport, along with on-site parking, ensures smooth arrival and departure.
Children should already feel confident in the water and be able to manage intermediate waves independently. A dedicated helper must attend the session to assist with steadying the board, guiding water entry, and supporting safe recovery if a wave is missed.
All equipment is provided, though it's recommended that children bring swimwear for under their wetsuit and have enough mobility to perform turning, pumping, and carving movements.
Advanced coaching focuses on technical progression, flow, and control, while helpers provide close, hands-on support to ensure safety without limiting challenge. Each session is tailored to individual ability, promoting skill growth at a comfortable pace.
The facility combines state-of-the-art wave technology with spacious, safe surroundings and experienced instructors. Children benefit from structured repetition, consistent conditions, and a welcoming environment that encourages both confidence and performance development.
Changing facilities are available close to where this session is based, providing a warm place to get ready before heading out and somewhere comfortable to warm up afterwards. These areas are designed to be spacious and easy to use, especially for families or anyone managing young children or extra kit.
You’ll find indoor changing rooms with showers, lockers, and amenities such as hair dryers. Everything is arranged so you can store your valuables securely and rinse off after the water without needing to rush.
When this session is running, qualified lifeguards are on duty to monitor the water and keep everyone safe. They work alongside trained surf instructors who handle both the coaching environment and water-based supervision.
Their training covers a wide range of rescue and first-aid skills, ensuring you’re taking part in an activity overseen by professionals who can respond quickly to changing conditions. This gives you the reassurance of having expert support throughout your time in the water.
Wetsuits and accessories suitable for local water conditions are provided as part of this session, including additional items like boots, gloves, or a hood when needed. Boards are also supplied so you don’t need to purchase or carry your own equipment unless you want to.
You’re welcome to bring your own wetsuit if you prefer using personal kit, and the team can check it fits the conditions on the day. Bringing a familiar wetsuit can be helpful for regular surfers wanting a consistent feel in the water.
Local water temperatures can vary, and cooler days are always possible. To keep you comfortable, the centre provides thick wetsuits and thermal accessories designed to retain heat during longer sessions.
Even on cold days, these wetsuits offer consistent warmth so you can focus on your time in the waves. Staff will help ensure you’re dressed appropriately before you start.
There is a café, bar, or restaurant near the activity area where you can order food and drinks before or after this session. Seating is available inside, with some spots offering views of the water so you can watch others surf.
Takeaway options are usually available as well, making it easy to grab something quickly between activities. Staff at the venue can guide you through ordering, dietary information, and seating availability.
