Strandhill's beach break sits in front of the National Surf Centre, so a 2.5 hour adult group lesson goes from the changing rooms to the sand in a few minutes. The brief covers safety, paddling and the pop-up, then most of the booking is in the water with an Irish Surfing Association qualified coach. Boards, wetsuits and boots are included.
Check in at the National Surf Centre, change into a wetsuit, then gather on the sand for a short brief. The coach sets the session to the group: first stands stay in the white water, improvers work on paddle-outs and where to sit. Feedback comes between waves rather than as a long talk on the beach.
Please arrive 15 minutes early. Hot showers and changing rooms sit in the centre next to the beach. The exact start can move with tide and swell; we confirm the time after you book. If you already own a board or suit, bring them.
Strandhill sits on Sligo's Atlantic coast, a short drive from Sligo town. The meeting point is the National Surf Centre on Shore Road, F91 XH50, opposite the main beach. Parking is nearby, and cafes sit a short walk away.
The beach is a sandy break with space for learners and people who already ride white water. Lifeguards cover the bay in the main season. We message you if the start time has to move with the tide.
No surfing experience is needed. You should be happy in the sea and able to spend time in waist-deep water. The booking is for ages 16 and over. Anyone under 16 should book the under-16 group lesson or a private session.
Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and a warm layer for afterwards. Your own full-length wetsuit is fine. Tell us any medical notes that affect time in the water.
Zuhe has coached for more than 16 years and the team holds Irish Surfing Association, Water Safety Ireland and child protection awards. Instructors are Garda vetted. Lessons can run in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French or German when we have a coach who speaks that language.
The centre is on the sand, so you are not walking a long way in a wetsuit. Hot showers are there when you come in. If you want more than one session, look at the three-lesson summer package or the five-day adult camp.
Meet at the National Surf Centre, Shore Road, Strandhill, Co. Sligo, F91 XH50. From Sligo follow signs for Strandhill and park near the centre, then walk to the beachfront building.
Please arrive 15 minutes before your start time so you can change and hear the brief. We confirm the exact time after you book, once the tide is clear.
The booking is about two and a half hours from the moment you arrive until you leave, including changing, a brief on the sand and time in the water. Most of that window is spent catching waves rather than standing on the beach talking.
Please arrive 15 minutes early so changing does not eat into the water time. The exact start can move with the tide, and we confirm that after you book.
The National Surf Centre on Shore Road, Strandhill, F91 XH50. Changing rooms, hot showers and toilets are in the building, a short walk from the sand. Parking is nearby.
If the start time has to move with the tide, we send the new time rather than a new meeting point. Check your messages the evening before and again that morning.
A surfboard, a wetsuit and boots. We match the board to your size and how the beach is working. You can wear your own full-length suit if you prefer.
Leave phones and bags in the changing room or the car. If you need an inhaler or other medication in the water, give it to the coach.
No. First-timers and people who already stand up share this adult booking. Tell the coach at the start so you are not repeating a first-stand drill if you already pop up.
If you want the coach to yourself, or you have a mixed family that needs a different pace, book a private lesson instead of this group slot.
Sixteen for this adult group. Anyone under 16 should book the under-16 lesson, which starts at seven, or a private session if you want a mixed family on the same coach.
The under-16 slot uses the same beach and the same kit. Ask when you book if you are not sure which listing fits the ages in your group.
Rain and ordinary wind do not stop a lesson. Wetsuits stay warm, and the brief still happens on the sand. We cancel or move the start when the swell or wind makes the beach unsafe, or if we cannot run a useful session.
If we have to cancel, we rearrange. Message us the day before if you are travelling a long way, so you are not on the road before the plan is confirmed.
Swimwear, a towel, a warm dry layer and sunscreen. A water bottle helps. Get changed into swimwear before you arrive if you want to skip the queue at the changing rooms.
Your own full-length wetsuit is fine. Flip-flops are useful for the walk from the car, then come off for the water. Leave valuables in the car.
The listing allows up to 24 people. Coaches split the water so you still get cues between waves rather than one person talking to a crowd on the sand.
Solo bookers join the same group as other adults who booked that slot. Larger parties that want the coach to themselves should look at a private lesson.
You need to be happy in the sea. Lessons stay in water you can stand in for first stands, but you still fall in and you still need to be comfortable with that. A coach stays with the group.
If you are very nervous in open water, say so when you book. We would rather point you at a private slot than have you struggle in an open adult group.
English is the main language. We can also run a session in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French or German when a coach who speaks that language is on the beach.
Ask when you book rather than on the morning of the lesson. We will say if that language is available on your date, or offer a date when it is.
