Praa Sands on the south coast has a wide sandy beach and a short walk from the car park to the water, which suits a first stand as well as someone already riding white water. A coach runs a two-hour group of up to eight, with a brief on the sand then time in the shore break. Boards and wetsuits are included, and the same kit stays with you for an extra hour if you want to keep going.
Meet at the beach car park, kit up, then walk onto the sand for a brief on safety, paddling and the pop-up. The coach sets the session to the group: first stands stay in the white water, improvers work on paddle-outs and where to sit. Feedback comes between waves rather than as a long talk on the beach.
Please arrive 15 minutes early. After the two hours you can keep the board and suit for another hour. If Praa is not usable, we move you to a nearby beach and send directions. Changing rooms, toilets and lockers sit at the meeting point.
Praa Sands sits on Cornwall's south coast, a short drive from Penzance, with a long sandy beach and a car park on Castle Drive, TR20 9TG. The walk from the meeting point to the water is short, which helps if you have children or a lot of kit.
Toilets and a beach cafe sit next to the car park. If the south coast is not working, we pick another beach and confirm it by message. Lifeguards cover the bay in the main season.
No surfing experience is needed. You should be happy swimming about 50 metres unaided and spending time in the sea. Children from 8 can join. Anyone under 8 needs an adult in the water with them, or a private booking.
Bring swimwear, a towel and warm clothes. Your own full-length wetsuit is fine. Anyone under 18 needs an adult on the beach for the whole lesson.
This south-coast base is run by the same coaching team as Gwithian, with coaches who hold surf awards and lifeguard qualifications. Chris used to head the British surf team, and the school is a Surfing England Centre of Excellence.
Groups stay small, the kit is on the beach, and you can add more lessons as a package if one session is not enough. You turn up with a towel. We sort the rest.
Meet at Praa Sands Beach Car Park, Castle Drive, Praa Sands, TR20 9TG. From Penzance follow signs for Praa Sands and park in the beach car park, then walk to the hire and lesson base.
Please arrive 15 minutes before your start time so you can change and hear the brief.
Two hours from the car park and back, with a short brief on the sand and the rest in the water. Most people spend that time catching white water rather than standing on the beach talking.
Arrive 15 minutes early so changing does not eat into the water time. After the lesson you can keep the kit for another hour and practise without a coach.
Praa Sands Beach Car Park on Castle Drive, TR20 9TG. Kit up there, then walk onto the sand. Toilets, lockers and a cafe sit next to the car park.
If Praa is not usable we send a new meeting point for a nearby beach. Check your messages the evening before and again that morning.
A surfboard, a wetsuit and a rash vest. Boots come out when the water is cold. You can wear your own full-length suit if you prefer. We match the board to your size and the day's waves.
The extra hour after the lesson uses the same kit. That hour is unguided, so only stay on if you are happy choosing waves without a coach next to you.
No. First-timers and people who already stand up share this booking. Tell the coach at the start so you are not repeating a first-stand drill if you already pop up.
If you want the coach to yourself, or you have a mixed family that needs a different pace, book a private lesson on the same beach.
Eight for a group lesson. Anyone under 18 needs an adult on the beach. Children under eight can join if an adult is in the water with them, or they can book a private session from age five.
Ask before you book if you have a mixed-age family. We will point you at the group slot or a private hour rather than mixing the two on the day.
Rain does not stop a lesson. We move or cancel when the swell or wind makes the beach unsafe, or if there is nothing useful to ride. A nearby beach is the first option.
We message you with the new meeting point. If we have to cancel, we rearrange. Call or message the day before if you are travelling a long way.
Swimwear, a towel, warm dry clothes and sunscreen. A water bottle helps. Get changed into swimwear before you arrive if you want to skip the queue.
Leave phones and bags in a locker or the car. Give the coach any medication you need in the water.
Up to eight. Solo bookers join the same group as other people who booked that slot. The coach still has time to give you cues between waves.
Bigger parties should book a private lesson so we can put more coaches on the sand. Tell us the headcount when you book.
Yes. Every coach holds a surf coaching award and a current lifeguard qualification. The same team also runs the Gwithian base, and the school is a Surfing England Centre of Excellence.
Chris used to head the British surf team. That does not mean the session is a performance camp. The aim is a useful two hours on this beach, at your pace.
Yes. Add a two, four, six or eight lesson package when you book if you want several sessions. Pick the first date; we agree the others with you.
Packages are for this group lesson on Praa Sands. If you later want a private hour, say so and we will look at that separately.

Coasterring with Lizard adventure. Great day out. Rory was great with us. Got some sea snacks along the way. Great jumps for all levels. Saw the seals. All in all a great day out
I was impressed that Steve contacted me to ask if my adolescents would like a more adventurous experience and tailored the coasteering to them. They all had a great time - came back exhilarated and exhausted. Thanks also for taking some great photos
Chris and Chloe were great guides and coaches, and provided us a wonderfull experience.
We had the best time! There 5 in our group today and Ru was the best guide. He made sure everyone was safe, comfortable with the level of challenge and knowledgeable about the area, flora, and fauna. The views from the cliffs and water were absolutely stunning! I’m so glad…
We had a fab time with Steve guiding us. A wide range of abilities and Steve enabled us all to meet our challenges and succeed. Highly recommend this as an amazing activity. Thumbs up for Steve. Thank you.
Five stars great fun and engaging and entertaining hosting!
