The AIDA 2 Freediving Course offers a complete introduction to freediving, combining theory, pool work and open-water sessions over 2.5 days or 4 half days. You’ll build a solid foundation in technique, safety and breath-hold skills while training to dive to depths of up to 20 metres. All equipment is included and no previous freediving experience is required.
The course begins with a comprehensive introduction to freediving theory, including safety protocols, the freediving breathing cycle, basic physiology, and equalisation techniques. You’ll also learn about different disciplines within freediving and become familiar with the use of specialised equipment. These sessions are reinforced with breathing and stretching routines to prepare your body and mind for both pool and ocean sessions.
In-water training is split between confined and open water. In static sessions, you’ll work on breath control and relaxation techniques, followed by dynamic sessions focusing on finning, streamlining and body positioning. Open-water dives take place just a short walk from the dive centre, where you’ll develop duck diving, equalising at depth, line diving with lanyards, turns, and safety procedures. You’ll work towards dives up to 20 metres and demonstrate a dynamic apnea swim of at least 40 metres. A final theory exam completes the certification.
All sessions are based in Puerto Del Carmen on the south-east coast of Lanzarote, known for its warm waters and excellent visibility. The dive centre is located at Calle Roque Nublo 2, within Jardines del Puerto Shopping Centre. From here, the ocean is just a two-minute walk, making access to training sites quick and convenient.
Puerto Del Carmen offers ideal conditions for beginner freedivers, with a variety of sheltered entry points and depth progression available directly from shore. The centre itself is well-equipped, and students benefit from high-quality Cressi Apnea gear, which is replaced regularly to maintain comfort and performance. Between sessions, there are cafés and shops nearby for easy refreshments.
Participants must be comfortable in the water and able to swim 200 metres without stopping. While most students are over 18, those aged 16 and above may take part with parental consent. No prior freediving experience is required, as the course starts with the fundamentals and builds up progressively.
It’s important that students are in good general health and confident in the water. Freediving requires focus, calmness and physical awareness, so a basic level of fitness and swimming ability will help you get the most out of the course. All training is adapted to suit your comfort level and progress.
This centre focuses on keeping group sizes small with a maximum of three students per instructor on the buoy, ensuring plenty of individual attention and support throughout the course. With a team of experienced instructors and assistants, they’re able to maintain quality training even when accommodating larger groups.
All sessions are run just minutes from the centre, allowing for a relaxed but efficient day structure. High-spec equipment from Cressi Apnea is provided as standard and renewed three times a year. With a flexible approach and a welcoming environment for all ages over 15, the team places safety and student progress at the heart of everything they do.
No previous freediving experience is needed. The AIDA 2 course includes all of the introductory skills from AIDA 1, so beginners can join straight away. You’ll start with the basics and gradually build up both your knowledge and comfort in the water, with theory, pool and open-water sessions guiding you step by step.
As long as you’re confident in the water and can swim 200 metres without stopping, you’ll be able to take part. The course is designed to help new freedivers develop the correct techniques and understanding to dive safely and efficiently, even if they’ve never worn a wetsuit or fins before.
AIDA 1 is a basic introduction, usually just a single-day taster course, and it does not result in a full freediving certification. It introduces some theory and gets you familiar with the kit and basic techniques, but it doesn’t go into deeper water skills or require assessments.
AIDA 2, on the other hand, is a full certification course. It includes all the material from AIDA 1 and expands significantly on it, covering safety procedures, breathing techniques, dynamic and static apnea, and dives up to 20 metres. You’ll also take a written exam and complete practical assessments.
The course runs over 2.5 full days or can be split into 4 half days for those who prefer a slower pace or want to spread the training out. Both options cover the same content and lead to the same certification; the choice just depends on your preference and availability.
Each training day includes a mix of dry-land preparation (like breathing practice and stretching), confined water work (usually in a pool or shallow sea), and open-water dives. Briefings and debriefings are built into the day, and your instructor will adapt the schedule based on sea conditions and group progress.
Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive the internationally recognised AIDA 2 Freediver certification. This qualification confirms that you are trained to safely freedive to depths of up to 20 metres and perform breath-holds of at least 2 minutes.
The certification is respected worldwide and serves as a foundation for more advanced levels, such as AIDA 3. It also allows you to freedive independently (within your training limits) at centres and with buddies, and to take part in deeper guided dives or additional speciality courses.
All equipment is included in the course price. You’ll be using high-quality Cressi Apnea wetsuits, fins, masks, snorkels and weight systems, all of which are specifically designed for freediving. These kits are comfortable, streamlined and help you move efficiently through the water.
The gear is replaced three times a year to ensure it stays in excellent condition. The centre staff will also guide you through how to properly fit, wear and use each piece of equipment. If you're considering buying your own gear later, this course is a great opportunity to try different setups first.
The course is based in Puerto Del Carmen, Lanzarote, at a dive school located in the Jardines del Puerto Shopping Centre. The full address is Calle Roque Nublo 2, Planta 01, Local 01. From this meeting point, it’s just a two-minute walk to the ocean training site.
This setup means you won’t need to travel far between sessions, and it helps keep the course flow smooth and relaxed. Shops, restaurants and cafés are nearby, so you’ll have access to food and drink during breaks. Transport to the centre isn’t included, but it’s easily reachable by taxi, car or public transport.
Accommodation is not included in the course, so you’ll need to arrange your own place to stay. However, there are plenty of options in Puerto Del Carmen to suit a range of budgets, from self-catering apartments to boutique hotels and holiday rentals. Many are within walking distance of the dive centre, making it easy to get to sessions each day without needing a car.
If you're unsure where to book, the team is happy to recommend local places that previous students have stayed at and found convenient. Staying close to the dive school is ideal, especially if you’re doing the course over 4 half days, as it gives you time to relax between sessions and explore the area without rushing.
Yes, you can book on your own, but a minimum of two participants is required for the course to run. If you're the only person booked on your preferred dates, the team will do their best to pair you with another student or offer alternative dates where others are already confirmed.
This approach helps keep sessions effective and safe, particularly for buddy work during pool and open-water training. Solo bookings are common, and most students are open to pairing up, so in most cases, it’s easy to find a match without delay.
