Full-day advanced 4x4 training builds on basic skills to develop confident handling across challenging terrain. Suitable for ambitious beginners or those with some off-road experience, the course combines practical driving with expert guidance to improve technique and vehicle control. Participants will learn to navigate steep descents, muddy ruts, cross axles, and other demanding obstacles safely and effectively.
The day begins with a warm welcome and safety briefing over a cuppa, followed by a step-by-step introduction to off-road driving. After a short classroom session, participants walk the course to familiarise themselves with the terrain and obstacles before getting behind the wheel. The half-day introductory session covers basic techniques for driving in mild to moderate off-road conditions, progressively increasing the challenge to build confidence and skill in negotiating obstacles safely while accompanied by an instructor in the vehicle at all times.
Following lunch, the course intensifies as drivers tackle more demanding terrain including failed ascent procedures, cross ruts, steeper inclines and declines, side slopes, and, weather permitting, water crossings. The afternoon’s routes test vehicle and driver limits on features like ‘The Gully’, ‘Screamer’, and ‘Oblivion’. Individual attention is provided through either a small group or exclusive 1:1 sessions, allowing participants to adapt their pace and focus on areas that need improvement, helping them gain the ability to drive 4x4 vehicles off-road safely and confidently.
The course takes place at Whitecliff Quarry, Newland Street, Coleford, Gloucestershire, GL16 8NB. The off-road site offers a varied terrain designed to replicate real-world off-road conditions including steep hills, muddy ruts, water crossings, and complex obstacles. Located in a secure area, it provides a safe environment suitable for both beginners and experienced drivers to practice and improve their skills away from public roads.
Nestled near the Forest of Dean, the site is surrounded by woodland and open land, offering a natural setting that supports comprehensive off-road training. Easily accessible from surrounding areas, the location also lends itself well to filming, promotional shoots, and vehicle testing due to its diverse landscape and facilities.
Participants must hold a full driving licence and possess a reasonable level of fitness to manage the physical requirements of off-road driving. No previous off-road experience is necessary, as this full day starts with the Introductory course in the morning before moving onto more challenging terrain after lunch; maximizing the learning outcomes.
Drivers should be able to comfortably reach all vehicle controls and maintain concentration throughout practical driving exercises. Suitable outdoor clothing and footwear are recommended. The course is open to individuals aged 17 and over and involves a full day of hands-on driving combined with theory sessions.
The centre is led by qualified, accredited BORDA trainers with over 25 years’ experience in off-road driving, trials, and competitive safari championships. Their friendly approach will guide you through each scenario in a relaxed atmosphere and ensuring safety at-all-times. Whitecliff4x4 also offers work-place training that complies with PUWER health and safety regulations, ensuring professional and safe instruction.
Specialising in off-road driver training rather than pay-and-play sessions, the centre delivers tailored tuition based on individual skill levels and objectives. Regular site inspections and a rigorous accreditation process maintain high standards. The instructors support a wide range of clients from beginners to those preparing for overland expeditions or competitive events, providing a trusted and expert learning environment.
One spectator per participant is welcome to visit the off-road site and observe the session. They may bring their own vehicle to use as a base, which is helpful in case of wet or cooler weather. However, the off-road area does not have any undercover facilities, so spectators should be prepared to spend time outdoors and dress appropriately for the conditions.
Since the environment is natural and open, it’s important for spectators to wear suitable clothing and footwear to stay comfortable. Weather can change quickly, so waterproof and warm layers are recommended during colder months, while sun protection and hydration are essential in warmer weather.
Passengers are not permitted on standard group courses for safety and instructional reasons. However, on exclusive one-to-one sessions, a single rear seat passenger may be allowed. There is an additional charge for passengers on these private sessions, so it’s important to enquire about this option when booking.
This policy ensures that attention remains focused on the driver’s learning experience and safety protocols. Allowing passengers only on private courses helps maintain controlled conditions without distractions or risks to others during the session.
It’s important to dress according to the weather conditions on the day of your session. Warm, waterproof clothing is advised during cold or wet weather to keep comfortable throughout the outdoor activities. In warmer months, bringing sun cream and a water bottle is recommended to protect yourself and stay hydrated.
Regardless of the season, sturdy and supportive footwear is essential because the terrain can be uneven, slippery, and muddy in places. Wearing appropriate shoes will help maintain grip and stability while on the off-road site, reducing the risk of slips and falls.
Lunch and hot drinks such as tea and coffee are provided for participants during their course. Spectators or additional guests should bring their own lunch if they plan to stay onsite throughout the day. Alternatively, extra lunches can be pre-ordered at a small cost, but this must be arranged with at least five days’ notice to accommodate dietary requirements or preferences.
Having food provided for participants ensures they remain energised and focused during the session without the need to leave the site. Spectators and companions should plan accordingly if they wish to eat onsite.
Pets are not permitted at the off-road site. This policy helps to maintain safety and hygiene standards for all participants and staff and prevents any potential distractions or risks during the sessions.
If you plan to attend with a pet, it will be necessary to arrange alternative care for them on the day of your visit.
Finish times vary depending on the number of participants and the specific course format. For half-day sessions, the aim is generally to conclude around midday to early afternoon, with lunch breaks factored in. Full-day courses typically finish between 3:30 pm and 3:45 pm, though some private one-to-one courses may continue slightly later, up to around 4:30 pm.
These timings are approximate because group sizes and progression can affect the schedule. Attendees should be prepared for some flexibility with start and finish times.
The off-road sessions use a fleet of Land Rovers, including Short Wheelbase Defenders and Long Wheelbase Discoveries. These vehicles are well-suited to handle varied terrain and provide a robust learning environment for participants.
The choice of vehicles ensures participants gain experience with commonly used off-road models, enhancing the relevance and practical skills taught during the sessions.
There are no specific height or weight limits because everyone’s build is different, but participants must be able to sit comfortably behind the wheel of a Land Rover Defender or Discovery. This means they should be able to safely reach the pedals and controls without difficulty and must not struggle to operate the vehicle due to their size.
Additionally, participants need to be able to get in and out of a manual vehicle independently, without needing assistance. If anyone has concerns about this, they are encouraged to contact the team before booking. Emergency contact details are collected on the indemnity form signed upon arrival, and participants receive a copy of this form along with joining instructions ahead of their session.
The course is designed for ambitious beginners who have completed an introductory off-road driving session or those with some prior off-road experience. The morning session begins with a review of basic techniques to ensure all participants are comfortable with fundamental vehicle control and safety. This foundation allows drivers to progress confidently into more challenging terrain during the afternoon. If you have limited or no off-road experience, it is recommended to first complete the introductory half-day course to get the most out of the advanced training.
Instructors tailor the day to individual abilities, so even if you are new but keen to learn, you will receive the support needed to develop your skills safely. The course is not suitable for complete novices without prior basic training, as it moves quickly into technical driving and complex obstacles. Being comfortable with handling a vehicle on uneven and slippery surfaces will greatly improve your learning experience and enjoyment.
The training takes place on a varied off-road site featuring real-world conditions to challenge drivers and improve their skills. You will tackle steep inclines and declines, cross axles, muddy ruts, side slopes, and water crossings when weather permits. The afternoon session includes some of the toughest routes on the site, such as ‘The Gully’, ‘Screamer’, and ‘Oblivion’, which test both your driving ability and vehicle handling under demanding conditions.
These obstacles teach essential skills like managing vehicle traction, using low range and low gear descents, and choosing the best routes to avoid damage or getting stuck. Instructors will also cover how to recover from situations such as failed ascents or loss of traction due to crossed axles. This hands-on approach gives practical experience in recognising hazards and adapting driving techniques to safely negotiate complex terrain.
