Learn how to safely drive your own 4x4 off-road with guidance from accredited instructors on this practical and vehicle-specific course. With one-to-one coaching throughout, you’ll gain confidence in your own vehicle’s features, traction systems and safe driving techniques. Whether you're preparing for green-laning, expeditions or simply want to understand your 4WD better, there’s a course to suit your level.
Stage One – Half Day (Recommended for LWB vehicles or no low range):
This is an ideal starting point for owner drivers new to off-road driving or those with vehicles that have limited ground clearance, long wheelbases, or no low range gearbox. Over the session, you’ll gain a thorough introduction to your vehicle’s 4WD system, with personalised instruction focused on low-risk techniques for different terrains. The session includes step-by-step practice over safe but technical terrain, reinforcing safe habits and control. Stage One is mandatory for any vehicle with limited off-road capability unless otherwise advised, with the exception of a Land Rover Defender LWB 110, which may join Stage Two.
Stage Two – Full Day:
Designed for owners who already understand the basics or whose vehicle is suitably equipped with low range and off-road-ready features. This session builds on Stage One with longer time behind the wheel and greater use of challenging terrain. You’ll cover hill climbs and descents, water crossings (if appropriate), and advanced traction control use. Instruction remains tailored to your vehicle, always within safe and non-damaging limits. It’s particularly useful for those planning solo adventures or wanting to test their vehicle’s limits with supervision.
Stage Three – Full Day (Experienced Off-Roaders Only):
For confident off-road drivers, this full-day course explores more advanced techniques including recovery methods using your own equipment such as ropes, strops, jacks and ladders. You’ll learn to identify and manage difficult terrain, and focus on how to use your vehicle’s features effectively in situations you might encounter during overland trips, competitions or remote routes. Please note, this course is not suitable for beginners and assumes you already have a good amount of practical off-road experience.
Courses take place at Whitecliff Quarry, Newland Street, Coleford, Gloucestershire, GL16 8NB, a purpose-designed off-road training site in the heart of the Forest of Dean. The quarry setting provides a varied and controlled environment, ideal for learning across a range of real-world terrains. With woodland trails, steep inclines, technical sections, and open areas, it allows instructors to adapt the session to suit both your vehicle and your experience level.
The site is well established with facilities for breaks and briefings, and all sessions are conducted with one-to-one instruction in your own vehicle. The venue is easy to access from Bristol, South Wales, and across the South West, making it a popular choice for off-road enthusiasts and professionals alike.
You must hold a full UK driving licence and be aged 17 or over. You will need to bring your own 4x4 vehicle, which must be in a safe and roadworthy condition with suitable off-road capability. Vehicles with limited ground clearance, no low range gears or long wheelbases should only book Stage One, unless advised otherwise (Defender 110s may book Stage Two). Your vehicle must be insured, although this may not cover ‘off highway use’ – please check your policy in advance.
If you are unsure whether your vehicle is suitable, it’s strongly recommended you get in touch before booking. All instruction is delivered with your safety and the condition of your vehicle in mind, and instructors will never ask you to attempt anything you're uncomfortable with.
This centre is led by BORDA-accredited instructors with over 25 years of professional experience in 4x4 training, off-road competition, and workplace compliance. They specialise in PUWER-compliant 4x4 training for both recreational and professional drivers, combining detailed knowledge of vehicle mechanics with a practical teaching style.
All training is delivered one-to-one in a structured and supportive format, focused on safe, non-damaging techniques tailored to your own vehicle. The team are committed to promoting responsible off-road driving, ensuring each participant leaves with practical skills and greater confidence. With a long-standing reputation, regularly inspected site, and training that meets stringent UK-accredited standards, this is a trusted choice for anyone serious about learning to drive off-road.
One spectator per participant is welcome to visit the off-road site and observe the session. They may bring their own vehicle to use as a base, which is helpful in case of wet or cooler weather. However, the off-road area does not have any undercover facilities, so spectators should be prepared to spend time outdoors and dress appropriately for the conditions.
Since the environment is natural and open, it’s important for spectators to wear suitable clothing and footwear to stay comfortable. Weather can change quickly, so waterproof and warm layers are recommended during colder months, while sun protection and hydration are essential in warmer weather.
Passengers are generally not permitted on standard group courses for safety and instructional reasons. However, on exclusive one-to-one sessions, a single rear seat passenger may be allowed. There is an additional charge for passengers on these private sessions, so it’s important to enquire about this option when booking.
This policy ensures that attention remains focused on the driver’s learning experience and safety protocols. Allowing passengers only on private courses helps maintain controlled conditions without distractions or risks to others during the session.
It’s important to dress according to the weather conditions on the day of your session. Warm, waterproof clothing is advised during cold or wet weather to keep comfortable throughout the outdoor activities. In warmer months, bringing sun cream and a water bottle is recommended to protect yourself and stay hydrated.
Regardless of the season, sturdy and supportive footwear is essential because the terrain can be uneven, slippery, and muddy in places. Wearing appropriate shoes will help maintain grip and stability while on the off-road site, reducing the risk of slips and falls.
Lunch and hot drinks such as tea and coffee are provided for participants during their course. Spectators or additional guests should bring their own lunch if they plan to stay onsite throughout the day. Alternatively, extra lunches can be pre-ordered at a small cost, but this must be arranged with at least five days’ notice to accommodate dietary requirements or preferences.
Having food provided for participants ensures they remain energised and focused during the session without the need to leave the site. Spectators and companions should plan accordingly if they wish to eat onsite.
Pets are not permitted at the off-road site. This policy helps to maintain safety and hygiene standards for all participants and staff and prevents any potential distractions or risks during the sessions.
If you plan to attend with a pet, it will be necessary to arrange alternative care for them on the day of your visit.
Finish times vary depending on the number of participants and the specific course format. For half-day sessions, the aim is generally to conclude around midday to early afternoon, with lunch breaks factored in. Full-day courses typically finish between 3:30 pm and 3:45 pm, though some private one-to-one courses may continue slightly later, up to around 4:30 pm.
These timings are approximate because group sizes and progression can affect the schedule. Attendees should be prepared for some flexibility with start and finish times.
Not all 4x4 vehicles are suitable for these courses. Your vehicle must be in good mechanical condition, road legal, and equipped with appropriate off-road features. Vehicles with limited ground clearance, no low range transfer gears, or long wheelbases are typically only suitable for the half-day Stage One course. An exception is the Land Rover Defender 110 LWB, which may take part in the full-day Stage Two. If you're unsure whether your vehicle qualifies, it’s best to get in touch before booking to avoid disappointment on the day.
Some 4x4 vehicles marketed for off-road may not be practically suited to more technical terrain, especially if they have road-biased tyres or electronic systems that limit traction. The goal of this course is not to test your vehicle to its limits but to understand what it can safely handle without damage. Bespoke instruction is available for certain makes and models, and advice will always be tailored to your setup.
Yes, these courses are designed with beginners in mind, especially those new to off-road driving or to their vehicle. It focuses on building confidence, understanding the 4WD system, and applying non-damaging driving techniques. Instruction is always one-to-one, so you’ll receive guidance based on your experience level and the capability of your vehicle.
For drivers with some experience or are contemplating taking their 4wd vehicle on green-lanes, the Stage Two offers a full-day progression that includes more challenging terrain and advanced techniques. Stage Three is only recommended for those who already have a solid background in off-road driving, as it includes recovery methods and more in-depth technical instruction.
You’ll need to bring your own road-legal 4x4 vehicle, a full UK driving licence, and ideally, footwear suitable for walking short distances on uneven terrain. While you will remain in your vehicle for most of the session, there may be times when you’ll get out to assess terrain or equipment (particularly in Stage Three).
Lunch and refreshments are provided, but it’s a good idea to bring any personal items you might need such as medication, snacks, or drinks for the drive home. If your vehicle has any recovery equipment you’d like to learn how to use (e.g. ropes, shackles, or jacks), you’re welcome to bring these for the instructor to review and demonstrate with, especially during Stage Three.
