This weekend coaching programme is ideal for white water kayakers looking to gain confidence and progress in a relaxed and encouraging setting. Whether you’re just starting out on Grade 2 or aiming to build consistency on Grade 3 and beyond, the focus is on developing your ability through hands-on experience in varied conditions.
The weekend is designed to be flexible and responsive to both group ability and water conditions. We’ll typically start with a morning briefing and skill recap, followed by time on the water introducing or reinforcing key techniques such as breaking in and out, ferry gliding, edge control and line choice. Your coach will provide ongoing feedback and small challenges to help you develop in real time.
On the second day, the group may paddle a different river or stretch, with the aim of putting new skills into practice in a slightly more challenging setting. Coaching remains tailored to the individual, and while there’s a focus on progression, safety and enjoyment remain the priority. Locations may include rivers in North Wales, Dartmoor, or other parts of the UK depending on water levels—especially during wetter months when level chasing is more likely.
Rivers are chosen based on the group's ability and the best conditions available that weekend. Common destinations include white water venues in North Wales, the Lake District, Dartmoor, and parts of southern Scotland.
Final location decisions are made closer to the date to ensure both safety and quality paddling.
You should be confident paddling on Grade 2 white water and ready to challenge yourself on more technical sections. A reasonable level of fitness is needed, as the sessions are active and can involve walking with boats and cold conditions, particularly in winter.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own kit, but some boats and gear can be borrowed with prior arrangement.
This programme is run by experienced and friendly coaches who take the time to understand each paddler’s goals. The team has years of experience leading progressive trips across the UK and creates a supportive environment where you’ll feel encouraged to try new things.
The emphasis is always on safe progression, enjoyment, and helping you build solid, lasting skills.
You should bring a towel, sunblock, a change of clothes, drinking water and a packed lunch.
We provide all the necessary kayaking equipment.
Safety is our top priority. In the event of inclement weather making the conditions unsafe, we may reschedule or cancel the course. We will notify you in advance and provide alternative options.
This coaching weekend is suitable for adults who are confident paddling Grade 2 white water and looking to progress towards Grade 3 or beyond. You don’t need to be able to paddle big features or advanced lines, but you should have a solid foundation in basic white water skills—such as ferry gliding, breaking in and out of eddies, and general boat control.
