These lessons offer children a safe and fun way to learn surfing while building confidence in the water. Led by fully certified instructors, the sessions focus on basic surf skills and water safety in a supportive group environment. All essential equipment is provided, making it easy to get started.
The lesson begins at the National Surf Centre in Strandhill, where participants are welcomed by friendly instructors who provide a brief introduction and safety overview. Equipment fitting, including wetsuits and boards, follows to ensure everyone is comfortable and ready for the water.
Once in the water, the group will work through basic skills such as paddling, popping up on the board, and catching small waves. Instructors guide the kids closely, adapting to their pace and providing positive feedback. The session finishes with time to warm up in the showers and reflect on the experience.
Strandhill is a charming coastal town in County Sligo, Ireland, known for its consistent waves that are ideal for beginner and intermediate surfers. The National Surf Centre serves as a convenient and well-equipped base with easy access to the beach and excellent facilities.
This area is popular with both locals and visitors for its welcoming community and beautiful coastline. The location combines good surf conditions with a relaxed atmosphere, making it a great spot for young surfers to develop their skills.
Children should be comfortable in the water and able to follow basic instructions. While no prior surfing experience is required, parental supervision or accompaniment during the full session is necessary for children of all ages. A swimsuit and towel are all that participants need to bring.
The team is led by a passionate surfer with over 16 years of experience who has travelled extensively to master surfing techniques and cultivate a strong appreciation for ocean safety. The lead instructor and his partner bring a warm, friendly approach to the lessons, creating an environment that welcomes surfers of all ages and abilities.
All instructors are fully certified by the Irish Surfing Association, Water Safety Ireland, and child protection authorities, with Garda vetting to ensure the highest standards of care. Their commitment to safety, combined with a genuine love for the sport and the local community, makes this surf school a trusted choice for young learners.
All lessons take place at the National Surf Centre in Strandhill, Co. Sligo. It’s a purpose-built facility right on the beachfront, offering direct access to one of Ireland’s most well-known surf spots. The centre is fully equipped and easy to find, with parking available nearby and great local cafés and shops just a short walk away.
Being based in Strandhill means you're learning in an area with consistent waves, ideal for both beginners and more experienced surfers. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards during peak season, and the bay's layout helps provide safe, manageable surf conditions most of the year.
You’ll need to bring a towel, swimsuit (to wear under the wetsuit), water to stay hydrated, and sunscreen if the sun’s out. It’s always good to come prepared for the changing Irish weather, so throwing in a warm jumper for afterwards is never a bad idea.
If you already own your own wetsuit or board, you’re welcome to bring them along. Some people prefer using their own gear, and we’re happy to work with whatever you’re most comfortable with.
Yes, absolutely. You're more than welcome to bring your own surfboard or wetsuit if you have them. Many returning surfers do this as they’re already familiar with how their own kit feels and performs in the water.
Even if you bring your own gear, our instructors will still tailor the lesson to your level. They’ll help you correct positioning on your board and offer advice on improving technique, regardless of what board you're using.
Yes – in fact, most of our participants are trying surfing for the first time. The sessions are beginner-friendly from the moment you arrive. We’ll start with a beach briefing covering safety and basic techniques, and then move to the water at your pace.
Our instructors are experienced at building confidence, helping you understand how to stand on a board, how to catch waves, and what to do if you fall. By the end of the session, most people will be up and riding – even if just for a few seconds!
No, swimming ability isn’t essential as lessons take place in waist-deep water. However, you do need to be confident being in the sea. If you're very nervous or have a fear of water, let us know in advance so we can support you properly during the session.
Even though the lessons don’t involve deep water, having basic swimming skills can help boost your confidence. Our instructors are always nearby and the lesson area is monitored closely to ensure safety throughout.
We provide everything you need to get started: a surfboard, wetsuit, and boots. All the equipment is well-maintained and suited to a range of sizes and experience levels. You just need to show up with your swimwear and a sense of enthusiasm.
Each session runs for around 2.5 hours, which includes kitting up, the beach briefing, practice in the water, and getting changed afterwards. It’s a good amount of time to learn new skills and still have energy left by the end.
You’ll have access to male and female changing rooms at the National Surf Centre. The facilities include hot showers, which are ideal for warming up after your time in the sea, as well as toilets and space to store your things.
The changing area is located right at the surf school, so it’s easy to get into your gear before your lesson and clean up quickly afterwards. We recommend bringing a bag for your wet swimwear and towel.
Yes – while English is the primary language used, many of our instructors are fluent in other languages. We can offer lessons in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and German depending on availability.
If you or someone in your group would prefer instruction in a specific language, please let us know when booking. We’ll do our best to match you with an instructor who speaks your preferred language.
