This two-day sport climbing course offers a great opportunity for both beginners and intermediate climbers to develop essential skills in a safe and enjoyable environment. Expert instruction will guide you through key techniques and help you build confidence, whether you're new to sport climbing or looking to progress to a higher level. The course provides a hands-on, practical experience, ensuring you can apply what you learn at any crag.
Day one begins with an introduction to the essential equipment, including ropes, quickdraws, and different types of bolts. You will also learn how to read climbing guidebooks and select routes suitable for your level. As you move into the climbing part of the course, your instructor will demonstrate key techniques, such as how to clip the rope into bolts correctly and how to safely retreat from the top of a climb.
During the second day, you will focus on refining your climbing technique and safety practices. You’ll work on the techniques needed to fall correctly and how to hold a fall safely. Your instructor will provide feedback on your climbing, helping you move up through the grades and feel more confident tackling more difficult routes. By the end of the course, you'll have the skills and knowledge to climb independently at a sport climbing crag.
The course is based in the Lake District, offering access to a variety of sport climbing crags, including local quarries and more challenging venues.
If you’re located elsewhere, we also offer the option to run courses in other areas, such as Scotland and Wales, with plenty of opportunities to explore different climbing locations.
This course is designed for beginners as well as intermediate climbers. A general level of fitness is recommended, but no prior experience is required.
For beginners, the course will introduce you to the basics of sport climbing, while those with some experience will focus on improving their technique and tackling more challenging routes.
The instructor brings a wealth of climbing experience from locations such as the Lake District, the Alps, and the Himalayas. With professional qualifications, including membership of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors, you can be confident that you’re learning from a highly skilled and knowledgeable expert.
The course is designed to be both fun and informative, ensuring you develop the skills needed while enjoying the learning process. You’ll leave the course feeling more confident and equipped to take on any sport climbing challenge.
Participants should bring comfortable outdoor clothing suitable for the weather conditions on the day, including layers, waterproofs, and sturdy climbing shoes.
If you have your own climbing harness, helmet, or other climbing gear, feel free to bring them along, though we can provide equipment if needed.
A packed lunch, water, and any personal items like sunscreen are also recommended for the day.
No prior climbing experience is necessary for beginners. The course is designed to accommodate both complete novices and intermediate climbers.
If you are new to sport climbing, you'll receive an introduction to the basics, including equipment use, techniques, and safety. If you have some experience, the course will focus on refining your skills and tackling more advanced techniques and routes.
The weather is always a consideration for outdoor activities. In the event of severe weather conditions that make climbing unsafe, we will reschedule the session or provide alternative indoor climbing options if available.
If rescheduling isn’t possible, we will discuss other options to ensure you still get the most out of your course.
Accommodation is not included in the course fee. However, there are plenty of accommodation options in and around the Lake District, as well as other areas where courses are held.
We can provide recommendations if needed, and some locations may offer discounts for course participants.
The instructor-to-participant ratio is 1:4, so you can expect small group sizes that ensure plenty of individual attention.
This allows for a more personalised experience and better opportunities for learning. If you prefer a private lesson, please let us know, and we can arrange that for you.

Had the benefit of having Paul to myself for this Hike up Helvellyn on Sun 12/10/25 on a on to one. Paul was welcoming, and very personable / friendly. He provided plenty of advice from walking & breathing techniques & walking with poles. Paul showed a lot of patience with…
Our time outdoor climbing with Paul was great! It was our first time trad climbing and also doing a multi-pitch climb.
