This two day introduction to Kilimanjaro follows the historic Marangu trail up to Mandara Hut and back down through Horombo, giving a genuine taste of life on the mountain without attempting the summit. It suits anyone short on time, travelling with children, or simply unsure whether a full expedition is for them.
Day one starts with an early transfer from your hotel to Marangu Gate, followed by a steady climb through rainforest to Mandara Hut. Black and white colobus monkeys are often spotted moving through the trees along the way, and there is time in the afternoon for a short walk to the nearby Maundi Crater.
Day two continues a little further up towards Horombo Hut before turning around and descending all the way back to Marangu Gate, where a vehicle meets you for the return transfer. The full day by day breakdown is set out below.
Marangu Gate sits on the eastern side of Kilimanjaro, a short drive from Moshi and around ninety minutes from Arusha, and is the oldest and most established entrance to the national park. The lower slopes here are covered in dense montane rainforest, home to colobus monkeys, turacos and a wide range of plant life that thins out as the trail climbs towards the moorland zone.
Huts rather than tents are used at each stop on this route, a legacy of Marangu being the original trekking trail up the mountain, which makes it a slightly more comfortable introduction than camping based routes. The surrounding Kilimanjaro region also offers coffee farms, waterfalls and cultural tours in Moshi for anyone extending their stay before or after the hike.
No previous hiking or climbing experience is needed for this two day trip, which is designed as an accessible introduction to walking on Kilimanjaro rather than a summit attempt. A reasonable level of fitness for a full day of walking is helpful, and it is a good option for families travelling with children who are not yet ready for a longer expedition.
Comfortable, worn in walking shoes and layered clothing make the biggest difference to enjoying the two days, since temperatures drop noticeably once you reach Mandara Hut. Anyone with a specific medical condition should mention it when booking so guides can plan accordingly.
Guides on this route are experienced at running shorter trips for families, first timers and anyone testing the water before a longer Kilimanjaro expedition, and pace the two days accordingly. Registration with the park's climbing permits and rescue service is handled on your behalf at Marangu Gate, so there is nothing to arrange once you arrive.
Because the huts along this trail already have basic facilities, the logistics are simpler than a full camping expedition, letting first time visitors experience the mountain's forest and moorland zones without a big commitment of time or gear. It is also a useful way to judge your own pace and enjoyment of high altitude walking before deciding whether to book a longer summit trek.
