This hard short trek is built for travellers who want a full mountain weekend without the Toubkal summit crowds. After an early transfer from Marrakech to Imlil, you meet your guide and mule team and climb toward Tizi Mzik Pass. From the top, wide views open across the Imlil Valley and surrounding High Atlas peaks before the trail continues to the Tamsoult Waterfalls for a lunch stop among cliffs and spray.
In the afternoon you descend through juniper forest into the quieter Azzaden Valley, finishing in Tizi Oussem for a traditional guesthouse overnight. Day two follows fertile valley paths through Berber villages and over Tizi Oudid Pass before a descent toward Ouirgane or Aguersioual and the transfer back to Marrakech. Expect long walking days, changing scenery and a pace managed by your guide around weather and group fitness.
Local mountain guides know these side valleys through every season and choose the safest line when cloud, heat or trail conditions change. Mule support keeps your walk focused on the path rather than heavy bags, while meals and guesthouse logistics are organised so you can concentrate on the views and village encounters.
The route feels more remote than the classic Toubkal approach while staying close enough to Marrakech for a compact two-day escape. Support stays practical and personal from the first hotel meet-up to the final city drop-off, with room to adapt the day for weather, pace and local circumstances.
An early pickup takes you from Marrakech south through Tahnnaout, Asni and the mountain foothills to Imlil at about 1,740 metres. The drive takes roughly one and a half to two hours as the city gives way to valleys and Berber villages.
On arrival you meet your guide and mule team, check kit and pack the bags that will travel on the mules. After a short briefing you set off with a lighter daypack toward the climb to Tizi Mzik Pass.
The trail climbs steadily to Tizi Mzik Pass at about 2,684 metres, with panoramic views across the Imlil Valley and toward Mount Toubkal on clear days. After a short rest you continue toward the Tamsoult Waterfalls, a dramatic cascade and a natural place to pause for lunch.
In the afternoon the path descends through juniper forest into the peaceful Azzaden Valley, passing terraced farmland and traditional stone homes. You finish in Tizi Oussem at about 1,850 metres for dinner and overnight in a mountain guesthouse. Walking time is typically around 5 to 6 hours.
After breakfast you walk through the heart of the Azzaden Valley, one of the more fertile High Atlas valleys, passing Id Issa and traditional stone houses built into the mountainside. The path climbs gradually toward Tizi Oudid Pass at about 2,000 metres with more open mountain views.
After lunch you descend through olive groves, terraced fields and villages toward Mattat, Aguersioual or Ouirgane, where your driver meets you for the return to Marrakech. Walking time is typically around 4 to 5 hours, with arrival in the city by late afternoon or early evening.
You will be picked up from your accommodation in Marrakech. Many riads do not have direct car access, so the driver parks nearby and meets you at a convenient point before the drive south through Asni toward Imlil.
The road journey takes roughly one and a half to two hours depending on traffic. At the end of day two you transfer from the Aguersioual or Ouirgane area back to Marrakech and are dropped near your hotel or riad.
Night one is spent in a traditional Berber mountain guesthouse in Tizi Oussem at about 1,850 metres. Expect simple shared rooms, home-cooked meals and genuine village hospitality rather than hotel facilities.
The overnight is designed for rest after a long mountain day, with a warm dinner and an early breakfast before the second day's walk. Bring a sleeping bag or liner if you prefer extra warmth, and a torch for moving around after dark.
Most of these items can be rented in Imlil if needed.

No technical climbing skills are needed, but prior hiking experience helps. Share any medical or fitness concerns with the team before you book so they can advise honestly.
