This course provides a comprehensive introduction to a career in outdoor instructing, covering multiple adventure sports and providing you with 20 industry-recognised qualifications. You’ll start by developing your personal skills in a range of activities, including rock climbing, paddlesports (kayak, canoe, and SUP), skiing, archery, and caving. These activities will build your technical skills, preparing you to lead groups safely and effectively.
As the course progresses, you’ll focus on becoming an instructor. You’ll learn how to plan and deliver safe and engaging sessions, with a strong emphasis on managing risk, leading groups, and dealing with emergencies. The training will provide you with the essential skills required to teach a variety of outdoor activities, from introducing beginners to rock climbing, to guiding a group down a ski slope or paddling on moving water.
Practical experience is key to this course, and you’ll have numerous opportunities to shadow experienced instructors, learning first-hand how to teach and manage groups in outdoor environments. You’ll take part in nationwide expeditions, including a European ski trip, where you’ll be able to apply your skills in real-world settings. Throughout the course, you’ll also receive evening workshops from industry experts, where you can further develop your knowledge and skills. By the end of the course, you’ll be ready to work as an outdoor instructor with the experience and qualifications needed to lead in a variety of settings, whether that’s guiding a group through a caving system, teaching rock climbing at a climbing wall, or leading a kayaking trip on a lake.
The course takes place in a countryside location near Bristol, with easy access to various outdoor activity sites. The area is known for its excellent terrain for climbing, hiking, paddlesports, and caving.
You will also take part in expeditions to various national parks across the UK, including trips to Dartmoor, South Wales, and a week-long skiing adventure in Europe. This variety of locations will give you experience in different environments, preparing you to instruct in various conditions.
No prior qualifications are required to join the course, but a good level of fitness and a keen interest in outdoor activities is essential. You’ll need to be motivated and committed to developing your skills, and be open to learning new techniques and knowledge in various outdoor sports.
While prior experience in some of the activities is helpful, it’s not mandatory as the course will provide comprehensive training in each discipline.
