What is Ofqual?

Ofqual is the regulator of qualifications, examinations and assessments in England. It does not run courses or issue certificates itself; it oversees awarding organisations (such as FAA, STA and Highfield) to ensure qualifications meet national rules for design, delivery and assessment.

When an employer or audit asks for a regulated qualification, they usually mean an Ofqual-listed award at a stated level on the Regulated Qualifications Framework. Outdoor instructor pathways may additionally specify syllabi from specialist providers even when workplace first aid is Ofqual-regulated.

Choosing a course

If you need an Ofqual-regulated certificate, ask the centre for the qualification title and reference number on the Regulated Qualifications Framework before you book. Leave a comment when you book explaining your compliance need (workplace HSE, instructor portfolio, etc.).

Regulation applies in England; Scotland and Wales have their own frameworks though many UK-wide providers still work to Ofqual-listed specs. Confirm acceptance with your employer if you work outside England.
