This immersive two-day course runs from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, based in Betws-y-Coed — the gateway to Snowdonia. It combines practical outdoor first aid with core mountain skills, giving you the confidence to manage yourself and others in real hill environments.
Training focuses on building competence and judgement, then putting those skills into practice on Welsh mountains. Expect real terrain, changing conditions, and supported progression — not classroom simulations.
Ideal as a next step to Outdoor First Aid or Responder course, or as preparation for larger UK or overseas expeditions.
This weekend builds on existing outdoor experience, focusing on practical skills that help you operate more confidently and independently in wild places.
You’ll develop:
Better decision-making in changeable mountain environments
Movement skills over uneven, steep, and mixed terrain
Risk awareness and management without relying on fixed plans
Group awareness and communication in small teams
Practical self-reliance — planning, pacing, and adapting as conditions change
Foundations of casualty care and problem-solving outdoors (integrated naturally into the weekend)
Learning is hands-on and scenario-based, with time to practise, reflect, and adapt — not classroom-led or assessment-driven.
This weekend is suitable for adults who already spend time outdoors and want to build confidence operating in wild places.
Participants should:
Be reasonably fit and comfortable walking for several hours on uneven ground
Have some prior hillwalking or outdoor experience (not suitable as a first-ever mountain experience)
Be able to carry a daypack with personal equipment
Be willing to engage actively, make decisions, and learn as part of a small group
Be prepared for changeable UK mountain weather
No formal qualifications are required. This is a learning-focused weekend, not an assessment or guided walk.
