Ghyll scrambling vs canyoning
Ghyll scrambling typically works upstream, climbing through the gorge with plenty of swimming, sliding and jumping — a high-energy, accessible adventure ideal for groups and families. Canyoning usually works downstream and adds rope work, with abseils down waterfalls and technical descents. Many Cumbrian operators offer both, choosing the venue and style to match the group's appetite and the water levels on the day.
What to expect
A session lasts roughly three to four hours in the gorge and involves cold water, exciting movement and a fair amount of adrenaline. Wetsuits, helmets, buoyancy aids and harnesses are provided. You need basic fitness and a willingness to get thoroughly wet; strong swimming ability matters less than water confidence, as wetsuits provide buoyancy and guides manage the technical sections.
