Canyoning — descending river gorges by abseiling, jumping, sliding and swimming through water — suits the North West better than almost anywhere in England. The western Pennines are full of waterfalls, narrow gorges and dramatic limestone features carved by rivers dropping steeply towards the coastal plain. Ingleton Falls, Howstean Gorge in Nidderdale and the becks running off the Lake District fells are all usable in the right conditions. Instructors know which venues to use and when.
What a canyoning day involves
A typical guided canyoning day in the North West runs five to eight hours. You'll need a wetsuit (provided), buoyancy aid, helmet and harness for abseil sections. The day involves a mix of: abseiling down waterfalls of varying heights; jumping into plunge pools at depths pre-checked by the guide; swimming or floating through narrow canyon sections; and scrambling over wet rock. It's physically demanding, cold, thoroughly wet and extremely good fun. The technical skills are handled by the guide; participants need reasonable fitness, a basic swimming ability and no strong objection to jumping off things.
Difficulty levels
Most North West canyoning is rated moderate in technical difficulty — abseil sections rarely exceed 15–20 metres, pools are checked before any jumping and routes are selected to match conditions and group ability. More challenging trips are available for those with experience. The hardest venues in the region involve longer abseils and more significant water features; these are run as separate, higher-grade experiences.
Best season
Unlike many adventure sports, canyoning is actually better in autumn and winter when water levels are higher. Summer canyoning is possible in all but the driest conditions; spring and autumn are the sweet spot. Always book in advance and expect the guide to have a backup venue in case conditions change on the day.
