Circling one of South Snowdonia’s most impressive peaks, this two-day route combines long climbs, remote gravel tracks, exposed moorland and some of the best coastal and mountain views in Wales. It’s a demanding but achievable loop for riders with good fitness who enjoy a mix of terrain and like the feeling of being in a truly wild landscape. Distances remain moderate, but the elevation, gradients and off-tarmac sections give the route its Moderate–Challenging rating.
The journey links Machynlleth, the Mawddach Estuary, the foothills of Cadair Idris and the quiet lanes and woodlands of Corris. Expect variety throughout: open mountain passes, rough tracks you may choose to walk, smooth lanes, impressive viewpoints and stretches of forest that feel far removed from busy tourist areas.
This is a self-guided route, with detailed navigation, full kit provision and backup support on hand should you need it.
This circuit heads north from Machynlleth into upland terrain with expansive views, then drops to the Mawddach Estuary before climbing again toward Cadair Idris. The mix of steep gradients, bumpy tracks and high-exposure sections requires confidence and good fitness. Gravel segments are rough in places and may involve short hike-a-bike moments.
You can choose between B&B or camping, each with different advantages. More information can be found in the 'accommodation' tab.
Meals are at your own expense, with recommendations provided. B&B stays include breakfast. Campers receive Firepot breakfast pouches and hot drinks to start the day. Lunch can be picked up en route or enjoyed as a packed option. Dinner is always available within reach, though campers should be ready for the hillside walk into Barmouth unless choosing a taxi.
The trip begins in Machynlleth at 10am, with kit packed into your provided dry bag and you dressed ready to ride. Setup and briefing take 1–1.5 hours. Expect to return by 3pm on Day 2. Train travellers should allow two hours before onward travel; trains connect via Shrewsbury. The start location is within walking distance of the station. Drivers can request advice on suitable parking; vehicles are left at your own risk. Non-ride items can be stored safely until your return.
Rated Moderate–Challenging, this route suits riders who enjoy long climbs, steep sections and varied terrain. Expect:
Though distances are moderate, the terrain and gradients create a demanding, rewarding two-day ride.
If cycling isn’t already part of your weekly routine, any steady mileage helps: commuting by bike, local hill rides, or indoor cycling sessions will make the climbs more manageable and help you stay comfortable over two full days.
This two-day loop captures some of Snowdonia’s most varied riding: high viewpoints, ancient woodland, quiet lanes, coastal estuary, steep climbs and bumpy gravel that keeps things interesting. With all equipment, logistics and accommodation arranged, you’re free to focus on the ride and enjoy a compact but memorable circuit around one of Wales’ most iconic peaks.
Meet in Machynlleth for your bike setup and briefing before heading out on a long, testing climb. As the gradient eases, the landscape opens dramatically, giving you views along the coast and toward the Llyn Peninsula. After spending time at the viewpoint, the route shifts character as you descend toward the Mawddach Estuary.
The descent includes a bumpy gravel track, passing mountain lakes and eventually linking to a wooden train bridge across the estuary—one of the most memorable moments of the route. The rest of the day eases off, rolling toward your accommodation near Barmouth.
Begin the day by following the peaceful Mawddach Estuary inland, with birdlife often visible along the shoreline. After a café stop, you rejoin the lanes and begin the steady climb back toward the foothills of Cadair Idris. The gradients increase and the final section is steep—one of the toughest climbs of the trip.
Quiet roads and gravel tracks lead through ancient woodland before rising once more onto exposed moorland with expansive views of the mountain. The final descent follows forested tracks into the village of Corris and then on toward Machynlleth.

Pack light, as everything must fit in the supplied dry bag and onto the bike.
Yes. A big part of bikepacking is travelling self-sufficiently. Everything you need fits into the bikepacking bags provided. Stick to the kit list, pack light, and you’ll be surprised how straightforward it is.
Carrying your own kit is part of what makes bikepacking so rewarding. We could move your bags for you, but it would take away the sense of independence and dilute the adventure. The challenge is part of the appeal, and most riders finish feeling proud of what they’ve achieved.
We provide Temple Cycles gravel bikes with high-quality components. They’re quick on the road, comfortable over rougher sections, and purpose-built for the type of mixed-terrain riding our routes involve.
You choose between B&Bs or camping.
We strongly suggest using the kit we provide. It’s chosen specifically for its low weight and packability, ensuring everything fits onto your bike. Bulkier personal gear often won’t fit.
There’s no strict maximum, but if your group is larger than eight, please contact us before booking so we can make the necessary arrangements.
Exact details vary by route and will be emailed to you beforehand. As a general guideline, please arrive at the start point in your cycling gear and ready for your briefing and bike fitting at 10am.
