Bikepacking is bike touring stripped back: your kit strapped to the bike, and you off into the hills for a night or three.

Overview

Bikepacking is the scruffy, adventurous cousin of road touring. You strap lightweight bags to your bike, leave the panniers and the tarmac behind, and ride off-road into places worth waking up in. Part cycling, part camping, all freedom.

You do not need to be an athlete, just comfortable on a bike and happy to be self-sufficient for a bit. Routes range from a gentle overnighter to multi-day backcountry trips, and you build up as your confidence and kit grow.

The guides on adventuro run bikepacking trips and skills sessions, sorting routes, kit and the knack of packing light. Half the skill is leaving things at home, the other half is being smug that you did.

A bike suited to rough ground helps, often a gravel or mountain bike. Some trips can advise on or provide bikes and bags, so check the session.

Fit enough to enjoy a day in the saddle. Routes are graded, so you can start with a gentle overnighter and build up.
