Hoogtepunten van de activiteit:

Travelling through Amsterdam by tandem bike is a fun and efficient way to take in the sights while working together as a team. Whether you're cycling with a partner, family member or friend, this two-person bike lets you share the experience in a completely different way. With flexible hire periods and a comfortable, well-equipped setup, it’s ideal for both short trips and full-day outings.

Key Details

Duration options: 2 hours – 1 week
Group size: 1–99 people
Bike features: 7 gears, 2 locks, front and rear lights
Optional extras: Basket, helmet, panniers, phone/GPS holder

What to Expect

The tandem bike is set up to ensure ease of use and safety for both riders. Each saddle and handlebar can be adjusted independently, making it suitable for pairs of different heights. The lightweight steel frame helps manage the slightly larger size, and with advanced roller brakes, you’ll have reliable stopping power without worrying about locking the wheels. The tandem is fitted with mudguards, a chain guard to keep clothes clean, and a luggage carrier with straps for carrying bags or shopping.

Riding as a pair is not just practical – it’s also great fun. If one person is less confident or doesn’t want to steer, they can sit on the back and still contribute to the pedalling. With the choice of 3 or 7 gears, you can handle everything from flat roads to Amsterdam’s bridges with ease. The tandem comes with both a ring lock and a cable lock, plus front and rear lights and a bell to keep you visible and safe during your ride.

Location

You’ll collect your tandem bike from a location right beside Vondelpark: Tesselschadestraat 1E, 1054 ET Amsterdam. Just a few minutes from Leidseplein and well-connected to tram and bus routes, it’s ideally placed whether you're staying nearby or arriving from further out.

From here, you're perfectly situated to cycle through the park, reach the canal belt, or head out to quieter districts.

Prerequisites

There are no formal requirements to hire a tandem, but at least one person should feel confident cycling in a city. The front rider must be able to steer, brake, and manage the bike in traffic.

Adjustments to saddle and handlebar height can be made easily on-site to ensure a comfortable fit for both riders.

Veelgestelde vragen:

What sizes are the bikes, and will one fit me properly?

We offer bikes in two frame sizes to suit a range of adult riders, as well as children’s bikes in two different sizes to accommodate younger cyclists.

Each bike is fitted with adjustable saddles and handlebars, allowing you to customise the fit to your height and riding style. Whether you're tall, short, or somewhere in between, we’ll help you find a bike that’s comfortable and easy to handle.

To hire a children’s bike, please see the other available sessions listed at the bottom of this page.

How do I lock the bike securely, and what kind of locks are provided?

To help prevent theft, every bike comes equipped with a robust locking system. Standard bikes include both a frame-mounted ring lock and a separate cable lock. E-bikes are fitted with an additional lock for extra security.

The ring lock secures the rear wheel, while the cable lock should be used to attach the bike to a fixed object such as a bike rack, gate, or lamp post. If you're riding with others, it’s also possible to chain your bikes together. Just double-check that you haven’t mistakenly locked your bike to someone else’s.

What clothes should I wear for cycling in Amsterdam?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement, and always dress appropriately for the weather. In cooler temperatures, dressing in layers works best—you may feel cold at first, but you’ll warm up quickly as you start pedalling.

Lightweight jackets, gloves, and scarves can be useful during colder months. Avoid tight trousers or clothing that might restrict your legs while riding, especially if you're planning a longer route. Footwear should be secure and suitable for pedalling.

Are there any areas in Amsterdam I should avoid when cycling?

Amsterdam is considered a safe city for cyclists, and there are no specific areas that are unsafe to ride in. That said, it's always wise to trust your instincts—if you’re cycling through a poorly lit or isolated street at night and it doesn’t feel right, choose a busier route.

Stick to marked cycle paths whenever possible, and be cautious in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.

Can I park my bike anywhere in the city?

No, parking rules do apply in Amsterdam. Bikes should always be parked in designated bicycle racks or clearly marked parking areas, which are widely available throughout the city. Avoid parking in the middle of pavements, near entrances, or on roads, as improperly parked bikes may be removed.

Around key locations like train stations or popular spots such as Leidseplein, it's especially important to use official parking facilities to avoid fines or bike removal.

How much can the panniers carry?

Our panniers have a maximum capacity of 14 litres, offering enough space to carry small bags, groceries, or personal items.

If you're planning to carry something heavier or bulkier, consider using a backpack as an alternative or additional option.

Can two adults of different heights comfortably ride a tandem bike?

Yes, the tandem bike is designed with independently adjustable saddles and handlebars for both the front and rear riders. This means two people of different heights can ride comfortably without compromising posture or balance.

Staff on-site can help make these adjustments before you set off to ensure both riders are supported properly throughout the hire.

Is it difficult to ride a tandem if one person isn’t an experienced cyclist?

Not at all. Tandem bikes are often chosen by pairs where only one rider is confident cycling. The person at the front is responsible for steering, braking and gear changes, while the rear rider just needs to pedal.

The back seat is a great option for children, those who aren’t comfortable navigating traffic, or anyone who prefers a more relaxed role. With practice, most pairs find their rhythm within a few minutes.
