Cycle through one of London’s most scenic green spaces on this guided mountain bike tour of Richmond Park and the River Thames towpath. Over two hours, you’ll explore historic landmarks, spot the park’s famous deer, and enjoy peaceful riverside paths led by a qualified mountain bike instructor. Suitable for all cycling abilities, this is a relaxed way to see the best of Richmond’s landscapes and heritage.
The session begins with a short safety briefing before setting off from Richmond Green, passing the historic Richmond Palace and the well-known “Ted Lasso” pub. You’ll then make your way into Richmond Park, home to herds of free-roaming deer, where your instructor will guide you along scenic trails and gentle climbs that open up to beautiful views of London’s skyline.
After exploring the park, the ride continues towards the River Thames. You’ll follow the towpath past Ham House and Eel Pie Island, enjoying a relaxed pace on quiet paths with no traffic. There’s a short rest stop halfway through the ride, perfect for taking photos or enjoying the view. For those who wish to extend the experience, there’s an option to continue towards Hampton Court Palace.
Throughout the tour, your guide will share local insights about the landmarks and nature surrounding Richmond, keeping the pace comfortable for everyone. Helmets and quality Trek mountain bikes are provided, and electric bikes are available for those who’d like a bit of extra help on the hills.
This tour takes place in and around Richmond, one of London’s most charming riverside areas. You’ll start near Richmond Green (TW9 1TH) and ride through the park’s trails, where ancient oak trees, open meadows, and grazing deer create an impressive natural backdrop. The area is well known for its wildlife and history, offering a refreshing escape from the busy city streets.
The route also follows the River Thames towpath, passing picturesque stretches of riverside scenery and several historic landmarks, including Ham House and Eel Pie Island. The terrain is mostly flat and traffic-free, making it ideal for leisure cyclists and families looking for a comfortable yet memorable ride.
Riders should be able to cycle confidently and have a reasonable level of fitness, as the route includes a few gentle hills. The tour is suitable for beginners as well as regular cyclists, with an electric bike upgrade available if preferred.
Please come dressed for the weather and ready to ride, as changing facilities are limited. Helmets and bikes are provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own cycling gear if you prefer. A waterproof jacket is recommended in case of rain, and personal belongings can be safely stored before the session begins.
The centre is run by a passionate team of qualified coaches who live and breathe outdoor adventure. Each instructor brings years of experience and genuine enthusiasm for helping others build confidence on the water or on land. Their professionalism and friendly approach have earned outstanding reviews across platforms like Google and Tripadvisor.
Every guide holds up-to-date qualifications from respected organisations such as British Stand-Up Paddleboarding Association (BSUPA), Water Skills Academy (WSA), Paddle UK, and the Academy of Surfing Instructors (ASI). With expertise spanning paddleboarding, kayaking, and cycling, the team ensures that every session—whether on the river or around Richmond Park—is safe, enjoyable, and memorable.
Not at all. The route is designed to suit riders of all abilities, from those who only cycle occasionally to those who ride more regularly. Your instructor will set a comfortable pace and check that everyone is confident before heading out. The focus is on enjoyment and exploring Richmond rather than speed or performance.
If you’re new to cycling, the terrain is mostly flat and traffic-free, with only a few gentle hills inside Richmond Park. You can also opt for an electric bike upgrade, which makes the ride even easier and allows you to take in the scenery without worrying about fitness levels.
All riders are provided with quality Trek mountain bikes that are well maintained and suited to the varied terrain of the park and towpath. These bikes are easy to handle, with smooth gear shifting and responsive brakes to make the ride comfortable and safe.
If you prefer extra assistance on the hills, you can request an electric bike upgrade when booking. The e-bikes are ideal for those who want to conserve energy or simply enjoy a more relaxed ride while still keeping up with the group.
Yes, children over 14 are welcome to join as long as they’re accompanied by a parent or guardian. The route mainly follows dedicated cycle paths and towpaths, keeping riders away from busy roads. Safety is always a top priority, and your instructor will ensure everyone feels confident before setting off.
There is a very short section through quiet residential streets to link the park and towpath, but the group always stays together and under supervision. Helmets are compulsory for all riders, and instructors are trained in first aid and safety management.
Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing is best. Lightweight sportswear or activewear works well, along with sturdy trainers. Since the British weather can be unpredictable, a waterproof jacket is strongly recommended just in case. Avoid loose clothing that might get caught in the bike chain.
Bring a small bottle of water and any snacks you might like during the break. We have a secure area where you can leave valuables or bags that you don’t want to carry while cycling. Helmets are provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer.
The tour usually goes ahead in light rain or overcast conditions, as the experience is enjoyable year-round. Riders are encouraged to bring a waterproof jacket to stay comfortable if the weather changes. The route is well-maintained and safe to ride in most conditions.
However, if the weather is deemed unsafe—for example, in heavy rain, high winds, or lightning—the session will be rescheduled or a credit will be offered. Safety always comes first, and you’ll be contacted as early as possible if any changes are made.
Yes, there’s a planned short stop roughly halfway through the tour. Depending on the group’s pace, your guide may stop near one of the riverside cafés or rest spots along the Thames towpath. It’s a good opportunity to have a drink, take photos, and enjoy the views.
You’re welcome to bring your own drink or snack to enjoy during this break. The guides are flexible and happy to adjust the stop slightly to suit the group’s preferences or weather conditions on the day.
The route is suitable for anyone with a basic level of fitness and the ability to ride a bike confidently. There are a few gentle hills in Richmond Park, but the pace is relaxed and there are plenty of opportunities to rest. Most riders find the 2-hour session manageable without any issues.
If you’re concerned about stamina, choosing an electric bike makes the experience effortless and enjoyable. It allows you to keep up with the group comfortably while still experiencing the full route and scenery.
