For many divers, becoming a Divemaster is the moment a hobby turns into something more. This professional-level course combines advanced diving knowledge, practical experience and real dive centre operations, preparing you for work within the diving industry while developing your confidence as a leader underwater.
Following your booking, PADI professional eLearning materials are arranged so you can begin studying before arriving in Tenerife. The online section covers dive theory, leadership responsibilities, risk management and the knowledge required of a professional diver. Completing this work in advance allows you to focus on practical development once training begins.
During the course, you'll divide your time between the dive centre, confined water sessions and ocean training. Practical exercises are designed to develop your ability to guide certified divers, assist instructors and manage diving activities safely and efficiently. Rather than simply learning skills for yourself, you'll begin thinking and operating like a diving professional.
Much of the training takes place within an active dive centre environment. This gives you the opportunity to observe daily operations, interact with certified divers and gain insight into how professional dive centres function. Ocean dives form an important part of the programme, allowing you to refine your underwater skills while exploring a variety of dive sites around Tenerife.
Successful completion earns you the PADI Divemaster certification, the first professional level within the PADI system. Graduates may also have opportunities to continue gaining experience through internships, further professional training and potential seasonal employment opportunities. Divers completing the required practical experience may also receive DSD Leader training, allowing them to assist with introductory scuba diving experiences.
Training takes place in South Tenerife, one of Europe's busiest diving destinations. The island's year-round diving conditions, varied underwater landscapes and large diving community make it an excellent place to begin professional training.
Throughout the course, you'll experience a range of dive sites while also spending time within a fully operational dive centre. This combination of practical diving and day-to-day industry exposure provides valuable experience that extends beyond the certification itself.
To enrol, you must hold a Rescue Diver certification and a recognised First Aid qualification such as Emergency First Response (EFR) or equivalent. You must also be at least 18 years old and medically fit for diving.
PADI requires Divemaster candidates to demonstrate a strong commitment to diving, good water skills and the willingness to undertake both theoretical and practical training. A minimum number of logged dives is required before certification can be issued.
Training takes place within a working dive centre rather than a purely classroom-based environment. This gives students the chance to experience how professional diving operations function while learning from instructors actively working in the industry.
The focus is on developing capable diving professionals rather than simply completing a certification. By combining leadership training, practical experience and exposure to real diving operations, the course helps prepare students for future opportunities within the diving world.
Accommodation is not included as part of the Divemaster course.
However, the team can provide local accommodation suggestions and guidance to help you find suitable places to stay close to the dive centre during your training.
The Divemaster course is aimed at experienced recreational divers who want to move into professional-level diving. It is the first step within the professional PADI pathway and can lead to work opportunities around the world.
Many divers choose the course because they enjoy helping others, want to spend more time underwater or are considering a future career in the diving industry.
A certified Divemaster can guide certified divers, supervise certain diving activities and assist instructors during training courses.
The qualification also opens opportunities to work within dive centres, resorts, liveaboards and other diving operations in many countries.
The Divemaster certification is a professional qualification recognised internationally by the diving industry.
Employment opportunities depend on experience, language skills, local regulations and individual employers, but the certification is the first professional step towards working in diving.
The course includes a significant theory component covering diving physics, physiology, equipment, skills, risk management and professional responsibilities.
Most students complete the academic sections through PADI's professional learning materials before or during practical training.
Professional divers are generally expected to own their own equipment, and there is a recommended equipment list for Divemaster candidates.
Where equipment is missing, assistance may be available during training, but owning your own gear is highly beneficial for professional development.
PADI requires Divemaster candidates to have a minimum number of logged dives before certification can be issued.
If you have not yet reached the required total, additional dives can often be arranged alongside your training programme.
DSD Leader training allows qualified Divemasters to participate in Discover Scuba Diving experiences for beginners.
This can be a valuable additional qualification, particularly in busy holiday destinations where introductory diving programmes are popular.
Yes. Equivalent certifications from recognised diving federations are generally accepted.
The instructors can review your qualifications and advise on any crossover requirements before the course begins.
Many divers continue to the PADI Instructor Development Course and become scuba instructors.
Others spend time gaining professional experience, completing speciality qualifications and working within dive centres before deciding on their next step.
