The ocean changes completely after sunset. Marine life becomes more active, familiar dive sites take on a different appearance and divers experience a side of the underwater world that few people ever see. The PADI Night Diver course teaches you how to dive safely and confidently when visibility is limited and natural light disappears.
As with other PADI speciality courses, training begins with eLearning and a theory session covering the principles of night diving. You'll learn about equipment requirements, communication methods, navigation techniques and how diving after dark differs from daytime diving.
Once the sun sets, the practical side of the course begins. Equipped with dive lights and guided by your instructor, you'll enter the water and discover how familiar dive sites can feel completely different at night. The focus is on building confidence, learning how to navigate safely and becoming comfortable in conditions with limited natural light.
Across three night dives, you'll gradually develop the skills needed to dive after dark while observing marine life that is often hidden during the day. Many species become more active at night, while others emerge from reefs and crevices to feed. These dives provide a fascinating opportunity to experience a completely different side of Tenerife's underwater environment.
By the end of the course, you'll have the knowledge and practical experience needed to plan and enjoy recreational night dives safely and comfortably.
Training takes place in South Tenerife, where calm conditions and accessible dive sites provide excellent environments for learning night diving techniques.
The island's clear waters and diverse marine life make it particularly rewarding for evening dives, allowing divers to experience a wide range of nocturnal underwater activity.
You must hold an Open Water Diver certification or an equivalent entry-level certification from another recognised diving organisation.
Divers should be comfortable underwater and confident using standard scuba equipment before beginning the course.
Night diving can seem intimidating at first, but the instructors focus on helping divers build confidence gradually through practical experience and clear guidance.
With carefully selected dive sites and experienced professionals leading every dive, you'll have the opportunity to discover why night diving is one of the most rewarding speciality courses available.
The biggest difference is the environment itself. Familiar dive sites can look completely different once darkness falls, and divers rely more on torchlight and navigation skills.
Many marine species also behave differently at night, creating opportunities to observe underwater life that is rarely seen during daytime dives.
No. The course is designed specifically for divers who have never dived at night before.
Training covers everything from equipment preparation and communication to navigation and safe diving procedures after dark.
Yes. Light use is an important part of the course and includes communication signals, navigation techniques and managing visibility underwater.
Your instructor will show you how to use dive lights effectively throughout the training dives.
The course includes three night dives completed under the supervision of a professional instructor.
Each dive builds confidence and allows you to practise the techniques covered during training.
When conducted properly and within training limits, night diving is a safe and popular activity enjoyed by divers around the world.
The course focuses on procedures and planning that help divers remain comfortable and aware throughout the dive.
Many creatures become more active after sunset, while others emerge from hiding places to feed.
The exact wildlife varies between dive sites and conditions, but night dives often reveal behaviours that are rarely seen during the day.
