A reef you dived at lunchtime becomes unfamiliar after dark. Fish that hid in crevices now hunt in the open. Your torch beam shrinks the world to a moving circle of light, and hand signals you relied on all day are useless without a glow stick or light signals.
PADI Night Diver teaches you to plan, navigate and communicate on three supervised night dives. eLearning is typically two to four hours at home. The in-water portion usually runs over two to three evenings, because you need actual darkness, not a dim afternoon pool slot.
Most students are nervous before dive one and hooked by dive three. The specialty is less about deep skills and more about calm procedures: how you enter from a dark shore, how you find your buddy when the torch slips, and how you ascend without blinding each other at the safety stop.
Night Diver is assessed on three open water dives, not in a written exam.

Most students feel nervous before the first dive and considerably calmer by the third. Your instructor controls the pace, keeps the group small and chooses sites with simple navigation for early dives.
If you have genuine anxiety about darkness or open water, say so when you book. A patient centre matters more than a fast schedule.
A primary dive light and a smaller backup are standard. Many centres rent both for training. Check battery type and burn time for cold water.
Attach clips so you cannot drop your only primary on a sandy bottom at 8 metres. Your instructor will show rigging options at the first briefing.
Glow sticks or marker lights help buddies see each other, but they do not replace proper light communication or a backup torch. The course teaches structured light signals for OK, attention and direction.
Relying on waving a single beam randomly confuses the group fast.
They must be open water night dives. That can be a sheltered coastal site, a quarry with night-diving permission, or a calm lake where local rules allow.
Pool sessions do not count toward the three dives. Leave a comment when you book if you want a specific site type.

One Adventure Dive does not automatically equal the full specialty card without the additional training dives and knowledge development.
Join club night dives, book liveaboard trips that run evening reefs, and pair night skills with Underwater Photography for bioluminescence and critter shots.
Night diving also complements Underwater Navigator if you want sharper compass work in low visibility.
