This multi-day river journey begins with an early departure from San Jose, travelling through national park landscapes and rural communities before reaching the Pacuare River. The first day on the water covers a long stretch of Class III rapids, offering a steady build of pace through forest-lined riverbanks, with time to take in the surroundings between sections. After the rafting section, the group arrives at a remote riverside lodge surrounded by dense rainforest, where lunch is served and the rest of the afternoon is kept flexible with optional guided walks, river fishing, or time to relax in the lodge’s natural setting.
The second day starts with breakfast before heading back onto the river for a longer descent featuring more technical Class IV sections. The route includes multiple stops along the way, with a guided jungle hike and a riverside lunch break built into the journey. The final stretch continues through changing river scenery before finishing at a private riverside base, where guests can shower, change, and unwind before returning to San Jose in the late afternoon.
This operator is recognised for delivering carefully planned, small-group journeys that focus on authentic outdoor experiences in Costa Rica’s most important natural areas. Every trip is designed with a strong emphasis on responsible travel, supporting conservation efforts and local communities while maintaining a high standard of safety and guiding expertise.
Travellers benefit from experienced naturalist guides who bring local knowledge of the river, rainforest ecosystems, and wildlife found along the route. The combination of river adventure, remote accommodation, and educational elements creates a balanced experience that appeals to both adventure seekers and those interested in Costa Rica’s natural environment.
The journey begins with an early morning departure from San Jose, travelling through scenic national park areas where rainforest landscapes and rural villages line the route. The drive continues into increasingly remote terrain until reaching the river access point, where a safety briefing and equipment check are completed before entering the water.
The first rafting section covers approximately 13 km of Class III rapids, offering a mix of steady river movement and more energetic sections. The surrounding forest remains close throughout, with opportunities to spot wildlife along the banks between rapids. After completing the river section, the group arrives at the riverside lodge for lunch and check-in, followed by time to settle into accommodation and enjoy the surroundings.
In the afternoon, optional guided hikes take guests along forest trails leading to waterfalls and natural swimming areas. Other activities include time by the river or relaxing at the lodge. The evening is spent at the lodge with dinner and time to unwind in a quiet rainforest setting.
The second day begins with breakfast and preparation for a longer and more technical rafting section. The river increases in intensity, with Class IV rapids requiring closer teamwork and attention to instruction from the guide. The route covers approximately 23 km, with continuous changes in pace and terrain.
Two planned stops are included during the descent, one for a guided jungle hike and another for a riverside lunch break. These sections allow time to explore the surrounding forest and learn more about the ecosystem before continuing downstream. The final stretch leads to a private riverside base where the rafting concludes.
At the end point, facilities are available to shower and change, with time to relax in the gardens and reflect on the experience before the return journey to San Jose.
Guests stay in a remote rainforest lodge positioned directly beside the river. The accommodation is designed to blend into the natural environment, with comfortable safari-style tents set on raised wooden platforms.
Facilities include modern bathrooms and shower areas, along with landscaped garden spaces that are maintained to integrate with the surrounding forest. The setting allows for a close-up rainforest experience while still providing practical comfort after a day on the river.
No previous rafting experience is required as full training is provided before entering the river. Guides explain paddling techniques, safety procedures, and how to work as a team in the raft.
The river sections are chosen to suit mixed ability groups, with progression from easier Class III rapids to more technical Class IV sections on day two. Support is provided throughout the experience.
The experience involves sustained paddling on both days as well as short rainforest hikes. A reasonable level of fitness helps you get the most from the activity.
There are regular breaks for rest, meals, and guided exploration. The second day is more demanding due to the longer distance and stronger rapids.
The rainforest surrounding the river is home to monkeys, sloths, toucans, iguanas, and many tropical bird species. Wildlife is often spotted along quieter river sections and near the lodge trails.
Encounters cannot be guaranteed as animals move freely through the forest. Early morning and late afternoon are generally the best times for sightings.
Accommodation is in a riverside rainforest lodge with safari-style tents on raised platforms. The setting is designed to keep you close to nature while maintaining comfort.
Facilities include proper bathrooms, showers, and communal spaces. The lodge is remote, with limited external noise and direct access to forest surroundings.
Yes, all meals are included from lunch on day one through to lunch on day two. Food is freshly prepared and designed to suit an active itinerary.
Meals are served at the lodge and during river stops. Dietary requirements can usually be catered for with advance notice.
You should bring clothing that dries quickly, swimwear, secure footwear for water activities, and a change of dry clothes. A towel and waterproof bag are also recommended.
