From take-off to landing, this private helicopter experience focuses on Costa Rica’s volcanic landscape, giving you direct views into one of the country’s most well-known craters. The flight combines altitude, geology and rainforest scenery in a short but wide-ranging route.
Following pickup from your accommodation in San Jose, you’ll travel to the nearby airfield where the helicopter and pilot are prepared for departure. A safety briefing is given before boarding, along with headsets that allow communication during the flight. Once airborne, the route heads towards the Central Volcanic Range, climbing above forested terrain as the Poás Volcano comes into view.
The highlight of the flight is the aerial pass over the main crater, where you can look directly down into its wide formation, known for its depth and geothermal activity. Surrounding features include fumaroles, mineral deposits and the distinct lagoon within the crater. The flight also includes views of Laguna Botos, a separate crater lake set within dense forest. After circling the volcanic area, the helicopter returns to San Jose, offering additional views across the surrounding landscape.
Poás Volcano is located within the Central Volcanic Range, close to San Jose and easily accessible by air. The area is characterised by active volcanic features, crater lakes and surrounding rainforest.
The wider region includes parts of Alajuela province, known for its varied terrain including mountains, coffee-growing areas and forest reserves. From above, these features create a layered landscape of natural and agricultural environments.
No previous flight experience is required to take part. A full safety briefing is provided before departure, and guidance is given throughout the process.
Participants should be comfortable flying at altitude in a helicopter. Basic mobility is required for boarding and exiting the aircraft.
Flights are operated with experienced pilots who provide detailed commentary on volcanic features and surrounding landscapes throughout the journey. The focus is on combining safety with clear insight into the natural environment below.
This experience is designed with a strong emphasis on quality and efficiency, allowing you to see one of Costa Rica’s most important volcanic sites without long overland travel. Responsible tourism practices are supported by working within regulated air routes and protected areas.
