Set within the varied rock landscapes of Donegal, this rock climbing taster offers a friendly introduction to climbing on natural rock. It’s designed for those who’ve never climbed before and want to understand what outdoor climbing is really about in a relaxed, supportive setting. With small groups and plenty of guidance, it’s an ideal first step into the sport.
The session begins with a short walk to the climbing area, chosen on the day to suit weather conditions and the group’s needs. You’ll be introduced to the equipment, shown how ropes and safety systems work, and given a clear explanation of what to expect before climbing starts. This early focus helps everyone feel settled and confident.
Climbing takes place on carefully selected beginner-friendly routes, with each participant taking turns while the instructor manages the rope. Guidance is offered throughout, covering movement, balance, and how to use your feet effectively on natural rock. Time between climbs allows for rest, questions, and learning by watching others.
As the session progresses, many participants choose to try slightly longer or steeper climbs, always within a controlled and supportive setup. The session finishes with time to talk through progression options, local climbing, and how to build on the experience if you’d like to continue.
Climbing takes place at selected crags across County Donegal, an area with a remarkable range of rock types, mountain settings, and coastal cliffs. Locations are chosen for their solid rock, safe setups, and accessibility for those new to climbing.
Meeting points vary depending on conditions to ensure the best possible experience. From inland crags near mountain passes to sea-level venues along the coastline, each location offers a different feel while remaining well suited to beginners.
No previous climbing experience is required, making this session suitable for anyone curious about trying rock climbing for the first time. A basic level of fitness is useful, but the emphasis is on technique and confidence rather than strength.
Participants should be comfortable spending several hours outdoors and able to walk short distances on uneven ground. Instruction is adapted to individual comfort levels, and there’s no pressure to climb beyond what feels right.
Sessions are led by Ian, a highly qualified mountain instructor with decades of experience climbing, exploring, and developing routes across Donegal’s cliffs, sea stacks, and mountain crags. His background includes extensive first ascents, guidebook authorship, and a deep understanding of the local landscape, allowing each session to be shaped by conditions and location.
With small group sizes and a strong emphasis on sound judgement and safety, every session is carefully paced and clearly delivered. The approach combines professional instruction with local insight, helping participants feel supported while gaining a genuine understanding of outdoor rock climbing in Donegal.
No experience is needed at all, as this session is designed specifically for beginners. Everything is explained clearly, from how the equipment works to how to move on the rock.
The instructor adjusts the session to suit each person, ensuring everyone can take part comfortably and at their own pace.
All climbing is managed using ropes and proven safety systems, with the instructor in control throughout. Safety checks are carried out before and during the session.

Routes are chosen for their suitability for first-time climbers, focusing on straightforward angles and positive holds. The aim is to encourage good movement rather than relying on strength.
As confidence grows, participants may try slightly longer or more varied climbs, always within a suitable difficulty range.
Comfortable outdoor clothing that allows free movement is ideal, along with trainers suitable for uneven ground. Layers are recommended to suit changing conditions.
All specialist climbing equipment is provided, so there’s no need to bring your own gear.
