Step beyond the climbing wall and experience bouldering on real rock. This outdoor workshop introduces the techniques, equipment, and safety practices you need to enjoy bouldering independently in the UK. You’ll spend the session outdoors with a qualified coach, learning how to read boulders, use mats effectively, and climb responsibly in natural settings.
Your workshop begins with a short introduction to outdoor bouldering and the site you’ll be climbing at. After a safety briefing, your coach will demonstrate how to set up crash pads and position them effectively. You’ll then work through exercises on spotting, falling safely, and reading boulder problems, with plenty of opportunity to practise each skill under supervision.
Once everyone is comfortable with the fundamentals, you’ll move on to tackling short, achievable boulders suited to your ability level. Expect guidance on technique, movement, and problem-solving, helping you transition smoothly from indoor to outdoor climbing. You’ll also discuss how to read guidebooks, assess rock conditions, and make responsible decisions about where and when to climb.
The session ends with a group debrief, where your instructor will review what you’ve learned and suggest ways to keep building your outdoor experience. You’ll leave with a strong understanding of how to stay safe, respect the environment, and make the most of every outdoor climbing opportunity.
Workshops take place at Sally in the Woods, a well-known woodland bouldering spot just outside Bathampton. This location offers an excellent mix of rock types and grades, making it ideal for learning key techniques in a peaceful natural setting.
The site is surrounded by ancient woodland, providing a sheltered space to climb with a variety of challenges to suit all ability levels. Easy access from Bath and Bristol means you can enjoy a half-day of outdoor learning without travelling far.
Suitable for adults aged 18 and over, this course is designed for anyone who has bouldered indoors and wants to transfer their skills outdoors. No prior outdoor experience is required—just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.
You should be comfortable with basic indoor bouldering techniques such as warming up, problem reading, and topping out. Your instructor will adapt the session to your level, ensuring it’s both fun and confidence-building.
Instructors bring years of outdoor climbing experience and are skilled at introducing climbers to natural rock in a safe, structured way. Their approach focuses on building confidence through practical learning, ensuring you develop both competence and awareness.
The team’s small group ratios mean you’ll receive plenty of individual feedback and have time to practise each skill thoroughly. Every workshop is designed to help you enjoy the freedom of outdoor climbing while respecting the environment and local access agreements.
