Scaling real rock and lowering yourself back down on a rope is a different kind of day out, and this taster brings both together in one relaxed, supportive session. Suitable for individuals or groups, it works well as a first outdoor activity or as a fun day out for friends and family.
The day begins with a warm welcome and a full safety briefing to get everyone set up in harnesses and helmets. From there the session moves into outdoor climbing, covering how to use the equipment, basic techniques for moving on rock, and the safety fundamentals that keep everyone comfortable and secure.
Once climbing has been covered, the focus shifts to abseiling, learning how to control your own descent and enjoy the feeling of lowering yourself down the rock face. A full breakdown of the day is set out step by step below.
This experience runs at a variety of climbing venues across the South West of England, chosen to suit your group's location and preferences. Popular areas include accessible crags with routes suited to complete beginners as well as more established climbers in the group.
Venues are confirmed once your booking is arranged, giving flexibility to pick somewhere convenient whether your group is nearer the coast or further inland.
No prior climbing or abseiling experience is needed to take part. You should be in good general health and comfortable with light physical activity, and the instructor will adapt the pace to suit everyone in the group.
This experience is led by a qualified Rock Climbing Instructor working towards Mountain Leader and Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor qualifications, so instruction is grounded in genuine outdoor expertise. The focus throughout stays on making the day inclusive, supportive and enjoyable rather than intimidating.
What started as a personal passion for the outdoors has grown into sessions designed to help individuals and small groups experience real rock safely, with plenty of encouragement along the way.
Sessions run at a variety of venues across the South West of England, with the exact location chosen based on your group's whereabouts and preferences.
This flexible approach means the day can be planned around convenience while still offering a great outdoor climbing and abseiling setting.
None at all. This session is designed for beginners and those with little to no climbing or abseiling background, and your instructor guides you through the basics from the very start.
If some members of your group have climbed before, the session can be adapted to give them a bit more of a challenge too.
Comfortable, weather appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear are essential, with trainers or lightweight hiking shoes working well for most people.
Bring plenty of water, snacks and lunch, since food and drink are not provided, and a small backpack is useful for carrying everything you need.
This activity suits most ages and fitness levels, though participants should be in good general health and able to take part in light physical activity throughout the day.
If you have any specific concerns or requirements, get in touch beforehand so the session can be planned accordingly.
The session accommodates groups of 1 to 6 people, making it suitable for individuals, couples, families or small groups of friends.
Smaller groups allow for more personalised instruction, while larger groups still get a genuinely sociable day out together.
Climbing involves moving up the rock face using holds and technique, while abseiling is the controlled descent back down using a rope and harness.
Both are covered during the day, so you get to experience the full range of what outdoor rock has to offer rather than just one half of it.
Yes, the day is structured so every member of the group gets multiple turns at both climbing and abseiling, with the instructor managing the pace so nobody is left waiting around for too long.
Group size is kept to a maximum of 6 partly to make sure everyone gets a proper amount of time on the rock.
Since this is an outdoor activity, heavy rain or high winds may mean the session needs to be rescheduled for safety reasons.
Your instructor will monitor the forecast in the lead up to your booking and will be in touch as early as possible if any changes are needed.
No specific skills are required, and there is no water involved in this activity, so swimming ability is not relevant here.
The main requirement is a willingness to give climbing and abseiling a go, along with a reasonable level of general fitness.
Once you have booked, you will be contacted to arrange a date and venue that suits your group's availability and location preference.
This gives everyone the chance to confirm details and ask any last questions before the day itself.
