Progress to traditional protection, belay building and confident movement on a two-day Rock Skills Intermediate course for young climbers aged 12 plus. You will practise placing gear, ropework and seconding on real rock while building environmental awareness alongside other developing climbers.
Over two intensive days on real rock, your instructor coaches you through the fundamentals of traditional climbing protection, including nut and hex placements, spring-loaded camming devices, and equalised belay anchors. You will learn how to build secure stance anchors, safely second a leader, and remove gear efficiently without dropping it.
Coached climbing blocks give you hands-on practice building belays and assessing rock features under direct instructor supervision, with continuous feedback on your placements. The syllabus also covers crag etiquette, access considerations, and essential guidebook interpretation to foster self-reliance.
The course takes place across prime Yorkshire gritstone venues such as Ilkley Moor, Brimham Rocks, or Almscliffe Crag, providing a rich variety of cracks, corners, and slabs. Instructors select crag sectors with easy access to solid top anchors and safe stances.
We email the exact meeting point, parking information, and daily schedule prior to the weekend so travel arrangements are straightforward. Bring sturdy footwear for the crag approaches and clothing suitable for two full days outdoors in changeable Yorkshire weather.
Minimum age 12; candidates should have completed Rock Skills Introduction or have logged at least ten outdoor climbs and ten competent belays. You must be confident fitting your harness, tying in, and belaying an active climber.
Good general fitness is required for two full days of moving on rock and carrying gear. Please tell us about any injuries or medical needs in advance so we can plan appropriately.
The team grew out of school and youth climbing programmes across Yorkshire, so instructors know how to keep young climbers safe while still having fun on real rock. We treat young climbers as capable adventurers, nurturing their technical precision and decision-making skills.
Our instructors hold recognized Mountain Training awards, outdoor first aid qualifications, and enhanced DBS clearances. We maintain exceptionally low coaching ratios, giving every participant personalized guidance on every anchor and placement they build.
Meet at Cow and Calf Rocks cafe area, Cow and Calf Rocks, Ilkley LS29 8TA. Allow extra time for moorland or crag approaches from the car park.
We send final directions, parking details and arrival time before your session.
Young climbers aged 12 to 17 who have finished Kids Rock Skills Introduction or climb confidently outdoors on top rope and want a two-day trad skills weekend with peers.
A parent or guardian must complete consent forms and remain contactable during the course even if they do not climb every pitch.
Two days of youth-focused coaching, group ropes and teaching racks, and Mountain Training aligned skills from movement through to placing gear on easy routes.
Personal shoes, harness and helmet should be brought if you own them; hire may be available on request when booked ahead.
We use family-friendly Yorkshire grit venues with straightforward approaches. Meet point, parking and what to wear are emailed before the weekend.
Drop-off and pick-up times are strict for safeguarding; please arrive five minutes early for registration on day one.
Climbing shoes, harness, helmet, lunch, snacks and water for both days, plus waterproofs and warm layers for long hours on the moor.
Label kit with names so group racks stay organised when everyone shares teaching gear between sessions.
Kids Rock Skills Introduction or regular outdoor climbing with a club is expected. Coaches check belay and tie-in competence at the start of day one.
If your child is nervous on exposure, tell us when booking so we choose crag sectors with gentler landings and shorter pitches.
Book through Adventuro and complete parental consent and emergency contact details before the course runs. Payment confirms the place once instructor ratios are secure for that weekend.
Youth course places are capped for safety, so waiting lists open when Easter or summer dates sell out. We email guardians as soon as a spare place appears.
Youth groups use sheltered crags when wind or rain picks up. Coaches keep energy positive with technique games at the base rather than forcing exposure in poor conditions.
If we cancel for safety, we contact guardians immediately with reschedule or refund options.
Parents do not need to belay unless agreed in advance; qualified staff manage ropes during coached sections. Spectating from a safe distance is welcome where venue rules allow.
We share a short end-of-day summary so you know what skills your child practised and what to revise at home.
Content follows the youth Rock Skills pathway and can be logged in a Mountain Training account when the young person is registered.
We explain registration steps to guardians on day one if you are new to the scheme.
Cancellation fees follow the UK tiers on this page. School holiday dates are popular, so please give notice if your child cannot attend.
We try to move learners to another youth weekend when illness strikes before course day.
