The route finishes at Porto Ribeira da Barca fishing village on the west coast, with time to enjoy the harbour atmosphere before returning to Praia. The day combines nature, culture and coastal scenery into a single moderate hike.
Gruta de Águas Belas lies inland on Santiago Island, with the walking route passing through Achada Leite and finishing at Porto Ribeira da Barca on the island's western shore. The area mixes rural highlands, cave geology and traditional fishing community life.
This west coast zone offers a different perspective on Santiago from the capital Praia, with village paths, agricultural landscapes and Atlantic views at the harbour finish.
Participants must be at least 12 years old with fitness for a moderate 10km walk over around four hours. Comfortable hiking shoes and sun protection are essential.
Mention any mobility or claustrophobia concerns when booking, especially regarding time inside the cave. The guide can advise on what to expect underground.
You'll walk with guides who know the cave, villages and coastal path, offering chances to connect with rural Santiago beyond the usual tourist routes. The combination of underground geology, village life and a fishing harbour finish makes this one of the island's most varied day hikes.
