The Ullswater Way is a 20-mile circular route that showcases some of the best scenery in the Lake District. This guided hike takes you along lakeside paths, through woodlands, and over rolling fells, offering a rewarding challenge with incredible views. The route includes highlights such as the 65ft Aira Force waterfall and the charming villages of Pooley Bridge and Glenridding.
Setting off from Glenridding, the hike begins with a gentle warm-up along the lake before heading into woodlands and open countryside. The terrain varies between well-maintained footpaths, grassy trails, and sections of rocky ascents and descents. Expect to be on your feet for most of the day, covering long stretches that require endurance and steady pacing.
One of the main highlights of the route is Aira Force, a spectacular 65ft waterfall surrounded by lush woodland. The trail continues to Pooley Bridge, a great spot for a short break before tackling the more challenging sections. From here, the route winds back along the eastern shore, offering incredible views across Ullswater before arriving back in Glenridding.
Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to take in the scenery, spot wildlife, and enjoy the sense of achievement that comes with completing this long-distance hike.
Ullswater is the second-largest lake in the Lake District and is often described as one of the most scenic. The surrounding fells, quiet woodlands, and charming villages make it a perfect setting for a day-long hike.
The Ullswater Way follows a circular route around the lake, connecting Glenridding, Pooley Bridge, Howtown, and Aira Force. The meeting point for the hike is the Tourist Information Car Park in Glenridding, where there are public toilets and parking available.
This hike is best suited for those with a good level of fitness, as the distance and terrain can be demanding. You should be comfortable walking up to 15 miles in a day and be prepared for uneven ground and some steep ascents.
If you have any medical conditions, please inform your guide beforehand.
