Navigation courses are available for all levels, from beginners to those preparing for Mountain Leader training or assessment. Whether you’re looking to gain confidence with a map, refine your navigation skills, or need a session tailored to a specific goal, these courses offer practical, hands-on experience to help you feel more at ease in the outdoors.
Introduction to Navigation
Ideal for those new to map reading, this session covers essential navigation skills. You will start with an overview of map types, followed by practical exercises in identifying key symbols and features. Progressing from theory to practice, you'll learn how to interpret contours, relate the map to the landscape, and track your position. The session focuses on building confidence with real-world scenarios in an outdoor setting.
Intermediate Navigation
This course is perfect for those with some experience who want to refine existing skills. You’ll work on more advanced techniques, such as precise navigation strategies, contour interpretation, and navigating across varied terrains. It’s also suitable for those preparing for a Mountain Leader Qualification, as it sharpens your accuracy and decision-making in challenging conditions.
Bespoke Navigation
Tailored to your specific needs, bespoke sessions are designed to help you prepare for an event, gain confidence with a particular route, or cater to a group’s objectives. These flexible sessions are ideal for those wanting focused, personalised guidance in navigation.
Courses are held in diverse landscapes across the Lake District, providing the ideal environment for each course level. The terrain will range from moorland to hills, offering both challenges and opportunities to develop real-world navigation skills.
All meeting points and specific locations will be confirmed upon booking, with considerations made for group needs and accessibility.
No prior experience is required for the Introduction to Navigation course. For Intermediate Navigation, basic map-reading knowledge is helpful but not essential. Bespoke sessions can be adapted to suit all experience levels.

No prior experience is necessary for the Introduction to Navigation course, which is designed for beginners. If you already have some basic map-reading skills, the Intermediate Navigation course will help you refine and build on them.
The courses are designed to be accessible to all, with a focus on map reading and navigation techniques rather than intense physical activity. However, there will be walking in outdoor terrain, so a moderate level of fitness is recommended.
This course will teach you the basics of reading a map, including how to understand map symbols, interpret contours, and track your position relative to the landscape.
You should bring sturdy outdoor clothing suitable for the weather, including waterproofs and warm layers.
Age is not a limiting factor for these courses as long as participants are comfortable walking in outdoor environments.
Yes, bespoke sessions can be arranged. Whether you need a tailored navigation session for a specific event, or a group session for a community or team, the instructor can customise the course to meet your needs.
