Dive into the unique environment of the Gannel Estuary with a kayak and snorkel session designed to reveal life beneath the water. Glide along calm waters while your instructor guides you through paddling and snorkelling techniques, allowing you to observe wildlife and underwater features up close. This 2-hour adventure is suitable for all abilities, combining exploration, learning, and fun.
The session begins at the travelling HQ set up on the estuary banks, where you’ll be fitted with a wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet, and snorkel equipment. A comprehensive safety briefing covers kayak handling, water safety, and snorkel use, ensuring everyone is prepared before heading onto the water.
Once on the estuary, your instructor will teach basic paddle strokes and navigational techniques, allowing you to move confidently through the calm tidal waters. Along the way, you’ll pause in lagoons and shallows to snorkel, spotting crabs, mullet, and other aquatic wildlife while learning how to observe underwater environments safely.
The tour includes exploration of Penpol Creek and a local shipwreck site, giving you the chance to dive off your kayak and inspect sunken remains. On the return journey, you’ll relax and enjoy the scenic surroundings, with blue lagoons, sandy bays, and rolling green hills providing a beautiful backdrop to the adventure.
The Gannel Estuary, located just north of Newquay, is a protected area of marine conservation and a site of special scientific interest. Its tidal waters flow through lagoons, reed beds, and sandbanks, offering both calm paddling and excellent snorkelling opportunities.
Surrounded by gently rolling hills and secluded bays, the estuary provides a peaceful retreat from the busier beaches of Newquay. The combination of natural beauty, wildlife, and historic landmarks makes it a unique destination for water-based activities suitable for families, groups, and individual adventurers.
This session is suitable for all abilities, but participants should be comfortable in the water and able to follow safety instructions from the instructor. Snorkelling requires basic swimming skills, but prior experience is not necessary.
Participants should wear swimwear under their wetsuit and bring a towel and change of clothes for after the session. The instructor ensures equipment is used safely and provides guidance throughout the tour.
The centre specialises in combining kayaking and snorkelling to provide a truly immersive experience on the Gannel Estuary. Instructors are highly trained and experienced, with extensive knowledge of the estuary’s wildlife, habitats, and historical sites. They personalise the session to your skill level and interests, offering one-to-one attention for smaller groups while still keeping larger groups engaged and supported throughout the adventure.
Safety and comfort are central to the experience, with top-quality equipment including wetsuits, buoyancy aids, helmets, and snorkels provided for every participant. Heated changing facilities, secure storage, and outdoor showers make preparation and post-activity routines simple and convenient. The team also adapts to varying weather conditions and tidal changes, ensuring that your adventure continues safely even if conditions are less than ideal. Optional extras like underwater photography, exploration of shipwrecks, and wildlife spotting make the session flexible and tailored, so every guest can leave with a memorable, personalised experience.
No prior experience is required for either kayaking or snorkelling. The instructor provides a full safety briefing and teaches you the basics of paddle strokes, kayak handling, and snorkel use before heading onto the estuary.
The session is designed for all abilities, so beginners are fully supported. Experienced paddlers or snorkellers can still enjoy the tour, as guidance is tailored to individual skill levels to ensure everyone is comfortable and confident.
Participants should wear swimwear or lightweight clothing under the wetsuit. Secure footwear, such as water shoes or trainers, is recommended, as you may step into shallow water when entering or exiting your kayak.
Wetsuits, buoyancy aids, helmets, and snorkel equipment are provided, ensuring you stay warm, safe, and comfortable throughout the session. A towel and change of clothes are recommended for after the activity.
The session is suitable for children aged 8 and above, as well as adults. Younger participants receive tailored instruction and supervision, with equipment adapted to their size.
