Hike the full width of Serra Malagueta Natural Park and descend into Gongon Valley on one of Santiago Island's most celebrated routes. The valley stays green year-round, village life is welcoming, and your guide shares rural culture and local food traditions along the way.
After morning pickup in Praia, you drive north for around an hour to begin hiking in Serra Malagueta Natural Park. The trail crosses forested ridges and open viewpoints before descending into Gongon Valley through terraced fields and rural villages.
Along the way you may taste local food and meet communities who live from agriculture in the valley. The outing finishes with return transfer to Praia.
Serra Malagueta Natural Park protects cloud forest in Santiago's central highlands, while Gongon Valley on the northern slopes stays green throughout the year. Together they form one of the island's finest full-park walking experiences.
The route offers a genuine taste of rural Santiago away from the coastal capital, with landscapes and village life that reward the moderate effort of the crossing.
A reasonable fitness level helps on the moderate uphill and downhill sections. Children from six years old are welcome with adult supervision.
Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring sun protection and water. Mention any mobility concerns when booking.
You'll cross the entire natural park with guides who know the trails and valley communities. Opportunities to taste local food and meet rural residents add cultural depth to the walk.
Pickup from Praia and manageable group sizes keep the day organised from the highland park to the green valley below.
Morning pickup from your accommodation in Praia can be arranged where applicable. Confirm your address when booking so the guide knows where to meet you.
