For climbers already leading or seconding to a VS standard, this course provides a fantastic opportunity to challenge yourself on the iconic sea cliffs of the UK. Whether you’re new to coastal climbing or looking to build more confidence, you’ll gain the skills needed to handle the unique challenges of climbing by the sea, all while enjoying amazing coastal routes.
The day will begin with a thorough briefing on sea cliff climbing techniques and safety measures. You’ll learn to manage exposure, the changing tides, and varying rock types while gaining the skills necessary for leading and seconding on coastal cliffs. Expect to spend most of the day climbing challenging routes, under the careful supervision of your instructor, who will guide you through all aspects of climbing on sea cliffs.
As the day progresses, you’ll tackle a range of climbs that will test your skills in new ways. Your instructor will be on hand to offer personalised guidance, helping you build your confidence and technique. Each route is designed to help you experience the unique aspects of coastal climbing, from technical challenges to exposure, all while ensuring your safety. By the end of the course, you’ll have gained the skills and confidence to tackle sea cliffs again in the future.
This course is held in some of the UK’s most iconic coastal locations, such as Gogarth, Pembroke, and the Orkneys. These areas are known for their dramatic cliffs and beautiful coastal scenery, providing the perfect environment to hone your skills.
Gogarth offers challenging routes with exposed positions above the sea, while Pembroke has an array of technical climbs. The Orkneys provide a more remote setting, adding an extra layer of adventure to your climbing experience.
You should be able to lead or second to a VS standard and be familiar with traditional climbing techniques, including belaying and ropework.
Coastal climbing can be physically demanding, so participants should be in good physical condition and comfortable with exposure and the challenges it brings.
The instructor has years of climbing experience, including adventures in the Alps and the Himalayas, as well as extensive time spent climbing in the UK’s most challenging locations. As a full member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI), they are highly qualified to teach safe and effective climbing techniques. The instructor’s passion for climbing shines through in every course, ensuring that you’ll have an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
With a wealth of experience, including completing the Wainwrights round and Classic Rock climbs, the instructor provides expert guidance and personalised support. They are dedicated to helping climbers improve their skills and tackle new challenges, all while enjoying the adventure of sea cliff climbing. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced climber, this course will help you push your limits in a safe, supportive environment.
This course is designed for climbers who are already comfortable leading or seconding at a VS standard. If you are not yet at this level but are confident in traditional rock climbing techniques and want to push your skills, this could be a good opportunity.
However, a strong understanding of belaying, ropework, and basic climbing techniques is essential for safety and enjoyment.
The instructor-to-participant ratio is 1:2, meaning each instructor will guide a maximum of two climbers. This allows for more personalised attention, ensuring that you get the most out of your experience.
If you’re booking for a larger group, we can arrange additional instructors to maintain this ratio for a safe and effective session.
You’ll need to bring appropriate clothing for climbing, including comfortable, weather-appropriate layers, as conditions on the sea cliffs can change quickly.
We recommend sturdy climbing shoes, a waterproof jacket, and a packed lunch.
Your safety is the top priority, and sea cliff climbing can be weather-dependent. If the conditions aren’t suitable on the day of your booking, we will work with you to reschedule or offer alternative arrangements.
You’ll be given plenty of notice and options for rebooking, ensuring you can still enjoy your adventure when the weather improves.
Accommodation is not included in the course, but we can provide advice on nearby places to stay if needed.
Whether you’re looking for a nearby hotel, B&B, or camping options, there are plenty of options depending on the location of the climbing session.

Our time outdoor climbing with Paul was great! It was our first time trad climbing and also doing a multi-pitch climb.
