Coastal desert hills east of Lima hide rolling dunes where you can swap city noise for sand underfoot and wide sky above the Pacific. This private day combines an expert off road loop with about two hours of sandboard instruction, so you climb ridges by vehicle and slide down faces with a coach at your side.
We collect you in Lima and drive south along the Pan American Highway until sand replaces pavement on the horizon. Your pilot runs an off road circuit through the dunes, stopping on high ridges where you can see the Andes rising inland and the ocean to the west. After the drive you meet the sandboard instructor, who fits boards and explains how to control speed before your first gentle runs.
You'll practice turns, falls, and faster lines as confidence grows, with the coach choosing slopes that match your progress. Between runs you catch breath in the open desert air, then return to Lima after the session with sand still in your shoes as proof of the morning. The day feels active but not rushed because private format lets you repeat runs you enjoy.
These dunes sit above the coastal plain south of Lima, where the desert meets the start of the Andean uplift in waves of sand. Access is by four by four from the highway, which is why a skilled pilot leads the approach rather than passenger cars.
Hotel pickup and drop off in the capital are included, so you do not need to arrange separate transport to an obscure turn off. The contrast between Miraflores streets and empty sand arrives within an hour of leaving the city.
No surfing or snowboarding background is required because instruction starts from zero on gentle faces. You should be comfortable climbing short dunes on foot and carrying a board between runs.
Closed shoes, sun protection, and a light layer for wind matter more than fitness stats. Tell the instructor if you prefer to stay on smaller slopes all day rather than progressing to steeper lines.
Licensed drivers and sandboard coaches work as a pair so the driving stays controlled while the riding stays fun. You'll get clear signals on where to stand on the board and how to slow down before anyone asks you to try a faster face.
Private vehicles mean your group repeats the lines you like instead of watching a clock for strangers. That focus turns a half day of sand into a proper introduction to the sport rather than a single rushed slide.
No prior sandboarding experience is needed because an instructor demonstrates stance, braking, and safe falls before you practice on gentle slopes. Most guests stand up at least once during the two hour riding block.
You'll wear a helmet where required and start on smaller faces before trying steeper lines if you feel confident.
Hotel pickup in Lima is included on standard private departures. The drive along the Pan American Highway takes about forty minutes to the dune access point.
Share your hotel details when we confirm timing so the driver knows where to collect you.
Minimum age twelve applies because of off road driving and board speed on steeper faces. Younger children cannot join this activity even as passengers on the dune circuit.
Teens and adults share boards once sizes are assigned at the dune field, with instruction scaled to each rider.
Groups up to six people travel in one private vehicle with driver and sandboard coach. Larger parties need a separate arrangement with our team.
Private format means you set the pace within safety limits rather than waiting for strangers.
Boards, helmets where required, and the four by four circuit are included. Wear closed shoes and clothes you do not mind getting sandy.
Sunglasses and sunscreen are essential on open dunes because reflection off the sand is intense.
Strong wind or heavy rain can pause riding. Your pilot may shorten the off road loop but still offer instruction if conditions allow.
Desert sun is strong even on cool Lima days, so hydrate throughout the session.
Solo travellers book one adult place and still receive a dedicated vehicle and instructor team. Couples and small friend groups split time on the boards between them.
We match board size to height and shoe size at the dune field before the first run.
Lunch is not part of the standard seven hour window unless your confirmation lists a meal stop. Eat beforehand or bring snacks for the van ride.
Water is often available on departures; confirm when we share pickup details.
The off road loop runs through rolling dunes with photo stops on ridges that look toward the Andes and the Pacific. Your driver chooses lines that match the group's comfort with bumps and tilt.
Hold on during the drive sections and listen to the pilot's hand signals when windows are open in dusty zones.
Two hours on the boards gives enough time to learn basics and enjoy several runs. Instruction happens on gentler slopes before you try faster faces.
Falling on sand is softer than on snow, but your coach still teaches how to bail safely.
