Morning light catches the mineral stripes of Vinicunca long before the crowds arrive, and this full-day hike from Cusco puts you face to face with one of the Andes' most surreal ridgelines. You will travel through the Southern Valley, walk with a local guide at high altitude, and return the same evening with Ausangate still etched in memory.
You'll leave Cusco in the dark for Cusipata, where breakfast steadies you before the drive toward the trailhead around four thousand eight hundred metres. From there you hike with your guide toward the famous colour bands, pausing for photos and breathers as the Ausangate massif dominates the horizon. The final approach to the viewpoint is the hardest section, and your team will pace the group so nobody feels rushed on the ridge.
After time at the summit you descend the same route, with lunch back in Cusipata breaking up the return drive to Cusco. Your guide shares practical tips for walking efficiently in thin air and keeps an eye on how everyone is coping throughout the day. Expect a long but structured day with clear rest stops rather than a race to the top.
The hike runs in the Ausangate area south east of Cusco, on community trails above Cusipata. Landscapes shift from cultivated valley floors to open puna grass and bare rock as you gain height toward the striped ridge.
Hotel pickup and drop-off in Cusco are included on standard departures, so you can rest in the van between walking sections. The drive itself is part of the experience, with snow peaks appearing and disappearing around each bend.
Fitness matters because you will walk for several hours uphill in thin air, even though the distance is modest on paper. Spend a few days at altitude in Cusco before you join, and choose broken-in waterproof boots rather than new trainers.
You do not need mountaineering skills, but you should be comfortable with a full day on your feet and honest about your pacing. Tell your guide early if the altitude feels wrong so the group can adjust together.
Our mountain guides know how to read weather and pace on Vinicunca without treating the day like a conveyor belt. We check kit at pickup, carry group oxygen support, and keep groups small enough that you still feel like a team on the trail.
You'll get clear timing for each stage of the day, from breakfast through the summit stop, so you can focus on the landscape instead of guessing what happens next. That structure makes a demanding day feel well supported rather than chaotic.
We collect you from central Cusco hotels at the time confirmed after booking. The drive to Cusipata takes about two hours each way.
Plan at least two full days in Cusco, or time elsewhere above three thousand metres, before the hike. The viewpoint sits around five thousand metres and the day is long even for fit walkers.
Your guide sets a steady pace and carries oxygen support for the group. If you feel unwell at altitude, descending early is always the right call.
Expect roughly four kilometres of uphill walking on a dirt trail after the drive from Cusipata. The gradient is steady and the thin air makes every step feel harder than at sea level.
Hill walking experience helps, but you do not need technical climbing skills. Regular cardio fitness and broken-in boots matter more than speed.
Children from age eight may join when accompanied by a responsible adult. The schedule starts before dawn and returns late, which can be tough for very young children even when they meet the age rule.
Teenagers who hike regularly usually manage well once they have acclimatised like adults.
Round-trip transport from Cusco hotels is included on standard departures. Share your hotel name when we confirm timing so the driver can plan an efficient early collection route.
The road to Cusipata takes about two hours each way, so motion sickness medicine helps if you are sensitive to winding mountain roads.
High winds, rain, or snow can make the ridge unsafe or hide the stripes. Your guide decides on the day whether to adjust timing, shorten the walk, or wait for a weather window.
Waterproof layers are essential even when Cusco looks sunny, because mountain conditions change within an hour.
Breakfast in Cusipata and lunch after the hike are included during the excursion. Vegetarian options are usually available when you tell us your preference in advance.
Bring personal snacks if you like particular energy bars, because the day is long and you will burn calories on the climb.
This departure is organised as a guided hike on foot. Horse support is not part of the standard day, so plan to walk the full route with your group.
If mobility is a concern, speak with us before you travel so we can advise honestly on whether this day matches your pace.
Trekking poles help on the descent and many guests bring their own. Boots with ankle support matter more than poles on the rocky sections near the ridge.
Your guide can advise on pole use at the trailhead if you are unsure how to adjust them for steep terrain.
Dress in warm layers you can remove as the sun rises, plus a waterproof jacket and hat. Sunglasses and high SPF sunscreen are important because UV is strong at altitude.
Pack a small daypack with water, gloves, and a spare warm layer for the windy summit stop.
Most guests prefer a compact daypack rather than a large rucksack on the narrow trail. Keep valuables secure and leave bulky luggage at your Cusco hotel.
A reusable water bottle is ideal; your guide will advise on refill points during the day.
