Choquequirao terraces hang above the Apurímac gorge like a stone amphitheatre few travellers reach, and this eight day journey wraps Lima and Cusco flights around five days of canyon trekking. You'll descend suspension bridges, climb switchbacks in heat and shade, and walk among ruins that still feel discovered rather than staged.
Trekking days begin with coffee at camp before you drop toward the river on gravel paths that test knees and patience alike. You'll climb to Choquequirao along ridges where vultures circle and the citadel slowly grows from speck to city. Guides schedule rest in shade because Apurímac afternoons run hot even when mornings feel crisp.
Mornings inside the ruins focus on terraces and viewpoints before you turn back toward Cachora on a return route that feels familiar yet harder on tired legs. Crew break camp ahead of you while cooks keep calories steady for long ascents. City hotel nights at the start and end bookend the wilderness with showers and soft beds.
The canyon lies north west of Cusco beyond Cachora, where the river cuts a deep trench through dry slopes and pocket forests. Choquequirao sits on a remote bench above the water, invisible until you are close enough to hear birds in the terraces.
Lima and Cusco provide the air gateways, with road transfers linking airports to trailheads. The landscape feels far from the crowded rail corridor, which is exactly why walkers come.
Canyon trekking rewards guests who already know how to sleep in tents and walk consecutive long days with a pack. Heat management matters as much as elevation because the river zone runs warm while nights cool quickly.
Broken in boots and trekking poles reduce strain on descents toward the bridge. Arrive with realistic expectations about steep grades rather than flat mileage totals.
Crew know water points, camp spots, and shade stops along a route with little infrastructure compared with classic trails. You'll eat hot meals above a gorge that most tourists only see in photographs.
We keep groups small so guides can watch footing on narrow sections and adjust pace when the sun peaks. That care turns a demanding expedition into a journey you remember for the silence as much as the stones.
Days one and two cover arrival in Lima and the domestic flight to Cusco for acclimatisation. Trekking runs from day three through day seven on the Cachora loop into Choquequirao and back toward Cusco by road.
Day eight is your flight from Cusco to Lima for international connections, with airport assistance on both arrival and departure days when listed on your confirmation.
Steep descents and ascents cross the Apurímac canyon with camping most nights and hot meals at trail camps. Distances look moderate on paper yet heat, sun, and tired legs on the return make days feel demanding.
Previous multi-day hiking experience helps you enjoy the rhythm of camp life and pack sensibly for warm afternoons and cool evenings.
Minimum age twelve applies because of long days, canyon exposure, and the stamina needed on consecutive climbs. Teens and fit adults are the usual participants on this expedition style route.
Younger walkers struggle with the combination of heat in the gorge and long ascents even when they hike regularly at home.
Lima and Cusco hotels on travel days plus tents on trek nights are included as listed on your confirmation. Bring a sleeping mat and bag suited to camp temperatures above the canyon.
Evenings are basic but scenic, with crew pitching tents while you rest after long walking days.
Domestic flights Lima Cusco Lima and road transfers toward Cachora are part of the packaged journey when shown on your voucher. International flights to Lima remain your own arrangement before day one.
Airport assistance on arrival days helps you reach hotels smoothly with the flight details you supply at booking.
Sturdy boots, sun protection, insect repellent, and generous water capacity suit hot canyon days on the approach and exit. Trekking poles help on steep gravel sections where knees take repeated impact.
Pack light for trail days and keep valuables in a dry bag inside your pack because mist and sweat are common near the river.
Choquequirao sees far fewer visitors than the famous sanctuary yet offers massive terraces and canyon views from ridgeline camps. Two mornings explore the archaeological zone before the return hike toward Cachora.
Mist often drifts through the ruins and adds mood to photos when clouds sit in the gorge below the citadel.
Maximum nine trekkers keeps camp manageable on narrow paths above the Apurímac and lets guides watch footing on exposed sections. Solo travellers may join available departures when a group is forming for the same dates.
Small groups mean you hear canyon birds and river noise between conversations rather than feeling lost in a large convoy on the switchbacks.
Cooks prepare trail meals while mule support may carry camp equipment depending on the departure you book. You still walk with a daypack containing water, sun layers, and personal snacks between scheduled stops.
Evenings include hot drinks before tent time while stars appear above the gorge walls.
Suspension bridges and steep switchbacks define the approach and exit, with the citadel sitting on a remote bench above the roaring river. Guides set conservative pacing on the hottest hours so the group keeps energy for the final climb out.
Shade breaks matter as much as distance on paper because afternoon sun in the canyon is relentless even when Cusco felt cool at breakfast.
