The RYA VHF Radio Online Course provides essential training for anyone planning to operate a marine VHF radio. This programme equips you with the skills and knowledge required for safe and effective communication at sea. With the convenience of online learning and a straightforward in-person exam, it’s an ideal option for skippers and crew members alike.
The course starts with approximately 8 to 10 hours of interactive online training that covers essential topics like routine VHF operations, emergency procedures, and ship-to-shore communications. This comprehensive syllabus ensures you’re well-versed in both theoretical knowledge and practical applications.
Once the online training is completed, you’ll receive a certificate that must be printed and brought to the in-person exam. The exam itself, overseen by an independent examiner, takes about an hour and includes a mix of practical and theoretical components. This involves scenarios like issuing a Mayday call and completing a multiple-choice question paper. After successful completion, your application is processed by the RYA, and you’ll receive a temporary license while waiting for your official document.
This training is completed online, allowing you to learn from the comfort of your home. The final exam, however, must be taken in person.

Once you've completed the online course, we will help you arrange your in-person exam with an independent RYA examiner. Remember to pay the £70 exam and licence fee directly to the RYA.
