The RYA Start Yachting Weekend Course is a perfect opportunity to get a taste of sailing and earn your RYA certificate in a fun and relaxed environment. Whether you're looking to try something new or prepare for further sailing qualifications, this beginner-friendly course offers hands-on training with a focus on learning key sailing skills. Set against the amazing backdrop of Barcelona, you’ll enjoy good winds and sunny weather, ideal for sailing.
The course begins on Friday evening with an introduction to the yacht and safety equipment. Over the weekend, you'll receive practical sailing training, starting with the basics, such as boat preparation and how to handle sails in various wind conditions. You'll have plenty of opportunities to helm the yacht and practice trimming the sails to adjust to the wind.
Throughout the weekend, you'll also learn essential safety procedures, including person-overboard recovery and how to handle the yacht in stronger winds. The course will focus on teamwork, as you'll work alongside your fellow participants to make the most of the boat’s performance. There will also be opportunities to visit local ports, giving you a feel for sailing in different locations. By the end of the weekend, you’ll feel more confident on the water and ready to move on to the RYA Competent Crew course if desired.
The course takes place in the vibrant city of Barcelona, with the marina located near Barceloneta, just past the iconic W Hotel. This location is ideal for sailing, offering great wind conditions and plenty of sunshine.
The nearby coastline provides beautiful scenery and diverse sailing routes, perfect for beginner sailors to practice their skills while enjoying the sights of the Mediterranean.
For those who choose to sleep onboard, the yacht offers 3 double cabins with the option to share as a couple or pay extra for single occupancy.
There are also 2 shower/toilet facilities (heads) onboard, as well as a galley for cooking. Meals are provided onboard, but dinner money is needed for evenings out at local restaurants.
There are no previous sailing skills required for this course. It’s ideal for those new to sailing or anyone looking to refresh their knowledge in a relaxed, hands-on setting.
If you plan to sleep onboard, a large bag with extra layers is recommended, along with waterproofs and non-slip footwear. Showers are available at the marina, so don’t forget to bring a towel.
