The course is a mix of theory and practical exercises, giving you the opportunity to apply what you've learned using practice charts and almanacs. With three assessment papers, you’ll demonstrate your knowledge in real-world navigation scenarios.
The course takes place at our training centre in Newark, Nottinghamshire, which offers a comfortable classroom environment equipped with all the materials you need for both theory and practical exercises. For groups, we can also arrange to deliver the course at a location that suits you.
It is recommended that you have completed the RYA Day Skipper Theory course before attending. If you haven’t completed this recently, or have not used the skills practically, we advise revisiting the Day Skipper course or arranging additional training. The course runs for 6 days and covers around 40 hours of classroom instruction. Sessions typically run from 09:00 to 17:00 each day, with breaks for tea, coffee, and lunch. Three exam papers are spread throughout the course to assess your knowledge.
Yes, upon successfully passing the course and completing the assessments, you’ll receive the RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore Theory certificate. This is a recognised qualification and is required for those wishing to take the practical RYA Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore exams.
