A great course delivered by Artur for anyone wanting the basics of power boating or to get their ICC. Being in the Thames you also get to experience most of the key London landmarks. I would definitely recommend AMR Marine!

Teaching powerboating requires a solid mix of practical skills, experience, and instructional ability. This course is designed for those who want to become qualified instructors under the RYA Powerboat Scheme. As an instructor, you’ll be responsible for delivering courses in small open powerboats such as RIBs, dories, and sports boats. The role covers a range of students, from leisure boaters to professional small boat skippers, so a broad understanding of different boats and conditions is essential.
The three-day training course focuses on developing both practical and teaching skills. The first two days cover instructional techniques, lesson planning, and refining boat handling ability to ensure candidates can confidently deliver sessions to students. This includes exercises in slow-speed manoeuvring, high-speed control, and emergency procedures, all demonstrated with clear, structured teaching methods.
On the third day, an independent Trainer assesses candidates on their ability to instruct and manage students on the water. Successful candidates will be qualified to teach RYA Powerboat Level 2 under the supervision of a Principal or Chief Instructor. Those who also hold the Safety Boat Certificate may extend their teaching scope to include the RYA Safety Boat Course.
A one-day conversion course is available for those already qualified as an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor (Power), allowing them to gain the Powerboat Instructor qualification without completing the full three-day course.
Training takes place on the River Thames in central London, covering areas from Blackwall Point through Greenwich, past Canary Wharf, and into central London near the London Eye. This stretch of river offers a mix of open water and busy boating traffic, creating a varied and realistic training environment.
With fast tidal flows, commercial vessels, and different types of small craft on the water, candidates gain experience in real-world conditions that prepare them for instructing in a range of scenarios.
Candidates must hold RYA Powerboat Level 2, a valid first aid certificate, and either a completed health declaration form or medical questionnaire. They should have a minimum of five seasons of logged powerboating experience, or one season if powerboating is a key part of their full-time work.
A pre-entry skills assessment must be completed before attending the instructor course.
This course is delivered by experienced instructors who specialise in training powerboat instructors to a high standard. The focus is on developing strong teaching skills alongside confident boat handling, ensuring that candidates leave with the ability to instruct safely and effectively. With access to well-equipped training boats and expert guidance, the course provides a professional pathway into instructing within the RYA Powerboat Scheme.
The training environment offers hands-on experience in a busy and varied setting, helping candidates develop the awareness and adaptability needed to teach in different locations. Whether preparing for a career in marine instruction or looking to build on existing boating knowledge, this course provides a solid foundation for teaching powerboating at an accredited level.
