Begin your outdoor climbing journey on a Mountain Training Rock Skills Introduction day for adults and teenagers from age 14. You will cover movement, belaying, abseiling, crag etiquette and planning so you can progress toward intermediate courses or a climbing wall belay test.
Your instructor opens with a clear overview of the Mountain Training syllabus, reviewing personal gear, helmet and harness fitting, and the fundamentals of climbing communication. Throughout the day, you will cover core movement principles, tying in with a figure-of-eight, safe belaying, holding practice falls, and personal abseiling on natural rock.
Practical coaching is broken down into structured blocks with plenty of time to ask questions, practice knots, and repeat climbs until the techniques feel intuitive. Your tutor monitors energy levels and local conditions, ensuring the day feels relaxed, supportive, and packed with hands-on learning.
Sessions make use of renowned Yorkshire gritstone edges such as Almscliffe, Ilkley Cow and Calf, or Brimham Rocks, chosen to offer accessible beginner routes and stable anchor platforms. Instructors select venues with sheltered crag faces when wind or light rain affects exposed crags.
We confirm the exact venue, meeting coordinates, parking options, and approach notes several days before the course begins. You will need sturdy approach shoes or trainers for the walk-in and warm, flexible clothing suitable for a full day on the crag.
Under-18s join with a paying adult. No previous outdoor climbing is required, though indoor wall experience helps. You should be comfortable on uneven ground for a full day on the crag.
Please share any medical conditions, injuries, or concerns about heights when you register. Our tutors adapt the pace and route choice so the day stays enjoyable for everyone.
Instructors combine NICAS wall coaching with extensive experience on traditional British rock, helping you bridge the gap between indoor climbing walls and the outdoors. We focus on demystifying outdoor terminology and building genuine crag confidence.
Small course ratios ensure that you receive thorough 1-to-1 coaching on every knot, belay technique, and movement skill. All courses are delivered by qualified Mountain Training instructors passionate about teaching safe, independent climbing habits.
Meet at Brimham Rocks car park, Brimham Rocks car park, North Yorkshire HG3 4DW. Allow extra time for moorland or crag approaches from the car park.
