Build traditional protection skills, belay systems and fluent movement on a two-day Rock Skills Intermediate course for adults and accompanied 12 plus climbers. Plenty of time on rock develops the confidence to second lead climbers on natural routes.
Across two comprehensive days on rock, your instructor guides you through traditional gear placement using nuts, cams, and hexes, alongside rope management, stance management, and belay construction. You will practice building secure multipoint anchors, equalising slings, and managing ropework as a competent second.
Coached climbing blocks allow you to test gear placements and build belays under the critical eye of an experienced tutor who explains the nuances of rock quality and directional forces. The course also equips you with basic problem-solving skills, crag communication protocols, and guidebook navigation.
Training uses celebrated Yorkshire gritstone edges such as Almscliffe Crag, Ilkley Moor, or Brimham Rocks, which offer world-class crack climbing and natural protection opportunities. Instructors choose crag locations with varied rock features and straightforward access.
We confirm the exact venue, parking instructions, and meeting arrangements prior to the course. You will need your own climbing shoes, harness, and weather-appropriate outdoor clothing for two full days on the crag.
Rock Skills Introduction or at least ten outdoor climbs and belays. You need confident harness, tie-in and belay skills before the weekend starts.
A reasonable level of fitness is necessary for two active days on the rock. Please inform us of any medical considerations or height anxiety when booking so your instructor can support you effectively.
We keep groups small so you get real feedback on every placement and anchor, not just a quick demo from the base of the crag. The tone is encouraging and unhurried, which suits adults returning to climbing as much as keen teenagers.
Delivered by experienced Mountain Training instructors holding current outdoor first aid credentials. Small ratios ensure you receive comprehensive individual feedback on every anchor, knot, and gear placement you build throughout the weekend.
Meet at Ilkley Cow and Calf, Cow and Calf Rocks, Ilkley LS29 8TA. Allow extra time for moorland or crag approaches from the car park.
We send final directions, parking details and arrival time before your session.
Climbers who have completed Rock Skills Introduction or can already second easy outdoor routes and want a structured weekend on trad gear. Adults and accompanied teenagers from 12 are welcome.
You should arrive confident tying in, belaying and fitting your own harness. Tell us about recent outdoor mileage when booking.
The course fee covers Mountain Training aligned coaching, group ropes and shared trad rack for teaching, and two full days on Yorkshire grit.
Personal climbing shoes, harness, helmet, food and transport are yours to arrange. Many learners bring their own harness and helmet.
Typical venues include Ilkley Cow and Calf, Almscliffe or Brimham depending on forecast and group ability. Exact car park and start time are emailed before the weekend.
Approach walks are on moorland paths; arrive with everything needed for two long days outside.
Climbing shoes, harness, helmet and a small rack bag if you own gear. Pack lunch, water, waterproofs and warm layers for full days on the crag.
A notebook helps if you like written notes on knots and anchor sketches between coaching blocks.
Rock Skills Introduction or evidence of at least ten outdoor climbs and belays is expected. Coaches will check belay competence on arrival.
Indoor-only climbers should complete an intro day first unless they already climb regularly outdoors with a club.
Request your weekend date on Adventuro and we confirm place, payment and any under-18 consent paperwork before the course.
Course places are capped for ratio reasons; early booking helps secure your preferred dates.
We choose crag aspects for shelter in wind or showers. Persistent heavy rain or lightning may shorten days or switch to a more sheltered venue.
If we cancel for safety before you travel, reschedule or refund follows the policy on this page. Your tutor explains any morning changes at the crag meet point.
Minimum age 12 with a paying adult on the course. Adults without minors are the majority on many weekends, so teenagers still get plenty of coaching attention.
Parent consent forms must be completed before course day for any under-18 participant. Contact us if you are unsure whether your child’s experience matches the intermediate syllabus.
Content aligns with the Rock Skills Intermediate syllabus and can be logged in your Mountain Training candidate account when outcomes are met.
Registration with Mountain Training is recommended before attendance, though coaches can walk you through sign-up at the start of the weekend if you are new to the scheme.
Cancellation fees follow the UK course tiers on this page. Weekend courses are harder to fill at short notice, so seven days notice helps us offer your place to another learner.
Contact us if injury prevents attendance so we can discuss transfer options where possible.
