Take the first step toward working on the beach or meeting the lifeguard requirement for surf coaching. Our RLSS National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NVBLQ) runs from Baggy Lodge in partnership with Ocean Frog Lifesaving Academy, using Croyde Bay and local pool facilities for training that mirrors real patrol environments.
The NVBLQ is a performance-based course, not an attendance award. You will cover beach lifeguard theory, life support and first aid, pool skills, and ocean rescue techniques, with timed swims, board paddles, running, and lifting built into the week from day one.
Training blends classroom learning with intensive beach and pool practicals, including CPR and AED use, rescue boards, risk assessment, crowd management, and scenario response. Ocean Frog delivery is led by trainer-assessors with decades of frontline experience; you must pass every module to qualify.
Module 1: Beach lifeguarding knowledge and understanding. Module 2: Life support and first aid. Module 3: Ocean skills in the open water. Module 4: Pool skills assessed to RLSS standards.
This is not a pay-and-pass course. Candidates must arrive on day one already meeting swim times and fitness standards; we train professional lifesaving skills under pressure using the latest RLSS resources across guided learning hours.
Course briefings and classroom modules use our purpose-built centre on Moor Lane, with practical sessions on Croyde Bay and at a local pool venue as required by the syllabus. You train on the same beach where our surf school runs daily lessons, so you see how a busy summer beach operates in practice.
North Devon gives you Atlantic surf, tidal movement, and exposed headland conditions that mirror the environments you may patrol after qualification. Baggy Lodge provides heated changing, hot showers, and lockers between classroom, pool, and beach days.
You must be 16 or older at assessment, generally fit, and competent swimming in the open ocean. Before day one you need a 200 m pool swim in under five minutes; for assessment you must swim 400 m in eight minutes or less with continuous front stroke and urgency.
You must surface dive to 2 m, tread water for two minutes, climb from deep water unaided, and have some surfboard or paddleboard paddling experience. Candidates who cannot meet the 400 m standard on day one cannot continue, per RLSS rules, so practise before you book.
We host the course at a Surfing England Centre of Excellence where daily lessons run on the same beach you will train to protect, so you see professional operations up close during your week.
Being featured in The BBC, Vogue, The Independent, Airbnb, Carve Magazine, and Surfing England reflects the safety culture behind our public sessions. NVBLQ graduates often go on to our Surfing England instructor pathway once certified, keeping your whole beach career in one place in Croyde.
Bring swimwear for pool and sea sessions, several towels, warm layers for beach days, running shoes, sun protection, and a packed lunch each day. You will be in and out of the water repeatedly, so quick-dry clothing helps.
Arrive on day one already meeting the swim fitness standards listed in Prerequisites. We provide rescue boards and course equipment during training; bring your own wetsuit if you prefer a familiar fit.
The National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification is the UK standard for vocational beach lifeguarding, recognised by RLSS UK, Surf Life Saving Great Britain, and Surf Life Saving Association Wales. It is endorsed by the National Water Safety Forum and the RNLI.
On completion you have the skills and knowledge to patrol beaches and support surf rescue operations in a professional or voluntary role, subject to local employer requirements.
The NVBLQ is delivered in partnership with Ocean Frog Lifesaving Academy, whose trainer-assessors hold extensive frontline lifeguard experience. Classroom, pool, and beach modules follow RLSS NVBLQ syllabus requirements.
We host the course from Baggy Lodge in Croyde, combining our surf centre facilities with Ocean Frog's specialist lifesaving delivery.
Training is a minimum of 40 hours over at least six days, mixing theory, pool work, and open-water sessions. Exact daily timings are confirmed before your course start date.
You must attend 100 percent of the guided learning and pass all assessments to receive your certificate.
The course is physically demanding. Expect timed pool swims, ocean entries, rescue board paddling, running on sand, and casualty lifting drills. Fitness is not taught from scratch during the week; you arrive ready to meet RLSS swim standards.
If you are unsure whether you are ready, practise the 200 m and 400 m pool tests before booking and contact us with your times so we can advise honestly.
Before the course you must swim 200 m in a pool (20 to 25 m length) in under five minutes. For assessment you must swim 400 m in eight minutes or less using continuous front crawl or breaststroke showing urgency.
You also need to tread water for two minutes, surface dive to 2 m, and climb from deep water without steps or assistance.
The NVBLQ certificate is valid for two years from the date of qualification. Renewal courses are available for current lifeguards who need to revalidate within the validity period.
Employers expect regular in-service training between renewals; keep practising rescue skills if you are not yet working on a beach.
Yes. Beach lifeguard certification is required before Surfing England issues surf instructor certification, so many candidates complete NVBLQ first or alongside our instructor programme.
We also offer Surfing England Surf Instructor training from the same Croyde base when you are ready for the next step.
Accommodation is not included in the course fee. Croyde and nearby villages have campsites, B and Bs, and self-catering options, many within a short drive of Baggy Lodge.
Plan to stay locally for the full six days so you can rest between intensive sessions and arrive on time each morning.
Pack swimwear, towels, warm layers, running shoes, sun cream, water, and lunch unless told otherwise. You will move between classroom, pool, and beach, so a dry bag for valuables helps.
Wetsuits are useful for open-water modules; bring your own or ask when you book about hire options for the week.
Yes. Our centre on Moor Lane has heated changing rooms, hot showers, and lockers, which you can use around training days based at the surf school.
Pool venue facilities apply on pool days; your joining instructions list which site to use each day.

You will find us in the heart of Croyde Bay, steps from one of the UK's most reliable beach breaks. We run surf lessons, coasteering, weekend surf camps, instructor training, equipment hire, and sea sauna sessions from our purpose-built centre on Moor Lane, with heated changing rooms, hot showers, and secure lockers so you can focus on the session.
Our coaches work at a six-to-one ratio on group lessons, hold beach lifeguard and Surfing England qualifications, and coach everyone from first-time surfers to national pathway athletes. Whether you join us for a single lesson, a private session, or a multi-day camp, we keep safety, progression, and time in the water at the centre of every experience.
