Time away from climbing has a habit of chipping away at confidence even when the muscle memory is still there. This course is built for returning climbers who want to shake off the rust, revisit core systems and get back onto the rock with a qualified instructor by their side.
Sessions start by talking through what you used to climb, how long it has been and anything you feel unsure about, so the refresher targets the right areas. From there it is straight onto practical climbing, revisiting the systems and movement that may have gone rusty.
The 1 day and 2 day options allow time to work through a wider range of routes and grades, building back up at a pace that suits you rather than rushing to where you left off.
Sessions are based around Frome in Somerset, with easy access to popular outdoor venues across the South West, including Cheddar Gorge and Portland. Indoor climbing walls are used for shorter sessions or when the weather rules out an outdoor day.
Having a choice of rock types nearby means a session can be pitched at exactly the right level, whether that means easing back in gently or jumping straight onto more demanding terrain.
This course is for climbers who already have some previous experience, even if it has been a while since your last session. If you have never climbed before, the Introduction to Rock Climbing course is a better place to start, and it is easy to switch between the two.
Coaching comes from a qualified Rock Climbing Instructor working towards Mountain Leader and Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor qualifications, who understands that returning to a sport after a break can feel more daunting than starting fresh. Sessions stay private and are paced around your comfort level, not a fixed script.
Many climbers use a refresher session as the confidence boost needed to get properly back into the sport, often booking a follow up Rock Skills Development session once the basics feel solid again.
Whether it has been a few months or several years, this course is designed to meet you where you are. The session is built around your own history rather than a fixed assumption of how much you remember.
If you are unsure how rusty you are, mention your last few sessions when arranging dates so the day can be planned realistically.
Coaching starts with a conversation about your background so the areas that feel rustiest, whether that is belaying, rope systems or general confidence, get the most attention.
Longer sessions naturally cover more ground, so a 1 day or 2 day course allows a more complete refresh than a quick 2 hour session.
All technical equipment is provided, including harnesses, helmets and ropes, so there is nothing you need to buy before booking.
If you kept your own climbing shoes from before, feel free to bring them along, otherwise hire can be arranged in advance.
Yes, an indoor session is a good way to rebuild confidence in a controlled environment before moving onto real rock, and this can be arranged as part of your booking.
Plenty of returning climbers prefer this gradual approach, especially if it has been a long time since their last outdoor session.
Yes, sessions are designed for 1 to 2 people, so you can bring a friend or partner who is also returning to climbing after a break.
Instruction stays personal at this size, with the pace and focus shaped around both of you.
If conditions are not suitable for the planned outdoor venue, the session can move indoors or be rearranged for a different day.
Your instructor keeps a close eye on the forecast beforehand and will be in touch early if any changes are needed.
This refresher is aimed specifically at climbers returning after time away, focusing first on rebuilding what may have gone rusty rather than pushing into new territory.
The Rock Skills Development course suits climbers who are already active and want to progress further, so many people move from a refresher into that course once they feel settled again.
Comfortable clothing that allows a full range of movement is ideal, along with trainers or approach shoes if you no longer have climbing shoes.
Layers are useful for outdoor sessions, since conditions on the rock can change more quickly than you might remember.
Most climbers find their body remembers more than they expect, though it usually takes a session or two to feel fully back up to speed.
The goal of this course is to rebuild that confidence safely rather than pushing straight back to your previous best, which tends to come naturally once the rust has worn off.
After booking, you will be contacted to arrange a date and venue that works around your availability and preference for indoor or outdoor climbing.
This also gives you a chance to talk through your background and what you would like to focus on before the day itself.
