Your session begins beside the beach with a short introduction to the equipment, conditions, and plan for the lesson. Because the facilities are located directly on Fistral Beach, there is very little walking involved, allowing more time to focus on surfing rather than carrying equipment across town. After getting changed, your instructor will tailor the session around your ability level and what you would like to achieve during your time in the water.
Beginners will usually start with the foundations of surfing, including safe board handling, paddling, catching white water waves, and learning how to stand up consistently. Instructors remain nearby throughout the lesson, offering constant feedback and demonstrations to help build confidence steadily. The smaller format also means there is more opportunity to practise between coaching points without waiting for larger groups.
For intermediate and advanced surfers, sessions can focus on improving wave selection, generating speed, refining turns, or developing confidence in different conditions. Video analysis can also be added for those wanting more detailed feedback on technique. Families with younger children can enjoy a more relaxed introduction to surfing together, while experienced surfers benefit from a session fully adapted to their progression goals.
Fistral Beach is one of the best-known surfing beaches in the UK, attracting surfers throughout the year thanks to its reliable waves and wide sandy shoreline. The beach offers plenty of space for lessons and practice sessions, making it suitable for both first-time surfers and experienced riders looking to improve their technique.
Situated on the north coast of Cornwall, Newquay combines surf culture with coastal walking routes, cafés, sea views, and long sandy beaches nearby. The lesson meeting point is located within the International Surfing Centre beside the beach car park, making arrival straightforward and giving direct access onto the sand within minutes.
Private surf lessons are suitable for complete beginners through to advanced surfers, with coaching adapted to your confidence and experience level. Children aged 5 and above are welcome to take part, although younger participants should have a parent or guardian present nearby during the session.
You do not need previous surfing experience to join. Weaker swimmers can also benefit from the private format, as coaching can progress at a more comfortable pace with closer instructor support throughout the lesson.
Coaching sessions are designed around personal progression rather than following a fixed group structure, allowing instructors to adapt every part of the lesson to the participant. With experienced surf coaches, year-round operation, and a wide range of equipment available, lessons are suitable for everything from first-time sessions to advanced coaching.
Being located directly on Fistral Beach makes a noticeable difference to the overall experience. Facilities including changing rooms, hot showers, secure storage, and on-site equipment mean less time organising logistics and more time enjoying the water.
Lessons are based directly on Fistral Beach, with the meeting point located inside the International Surfing Centre beside the large pay and display car park. Being positioned right by the sand means there is very little walking involved with equipment, so more time can be spent in the water.
When you arrive, head to the hire and lesson area at the beachside complex and aim to check in around 20 minutes before your lesson start time. This gives enough time to get changed, collect equipment, and meet your instructor before heading onto the beach.
Most of the session is spent in or beside the water practising techniques and catching waves. Instructors begin with a short beach briefing covering safety, positioning, and the basics needed for the session before getting everyone straight into the surf.
Because the facilities are located directly on the beach, there is no long walk carrying equipment across town or down cliffs, helping maximise time in the sea and making lessons feel more relaxed from the start.
Most surf lessons last around two hours in the water and on the beach, although it is recommended to allow extra time overall for changing, briefings, and getting organised before and after the session.
Many first-time surfers are able to catch and ride waves during their first lesson, while regular progression usually comes with multiple sessions. Around three lessons often helps build confidence with the basics, while a longer series of five or more lessons can help surfers become more independent in the water.
Surf conditions can vary depending on weather and sea state, so lesson locations or session plans may occasionally be adjusted to suit the safest and most suitable conditions available. While most sessions take place on Fistral Beach, nearby beaches around Newquay may sometimes be used when conditions are better suited to the group’s experience level.
Alternative activities may also be offered on flatter days when there is not enough surf for effective coaching.
Yes, private lessons are ideal for complete beginners as the entire session is adapted around your pace and confidence level. Instructors can focus fully on helping you understand the basics without needing to match the speed of a larger group.
Most first-time surfers spend the lesson learning paddling, wave timing, standing techniques, and ocean safety while practising in smaller waves close to shore.
Advanced surfers can use private coaching to work on specific techniques, manoeuvres, positioning, or confidence in different surf conditions. The session can also focus on longboarding, shortboarding, or bodyboarding depending on your goals.
Because the instructor works with you throughout the full session, there is more opportunity for detailed feedback and technical progression than in a standard group lesson.
Families are welcome to join the same private session provided the group is comfortable learning together. Instructors can adjust the lesson to suit mixed abilities where possible, helping everyone enjoy the experience at their own level.
For younger children, it is recommended that a parent or guardian accompanies them in the water as a surf buddy to provide additional reassurance and support.
