Swap busy streets for snow-covered mountain trails on this two-day winter adventure in the Vitosha Mountains. Using snowshoes — one of the oldest forms of winter travel — you’ll explore peaceful forest routes, snowy ridges and mountain landscapes alongside an experienced local guide who knows the area in all conditions.
Designed as a private experience, the trip combines active winter trekking with comfortable mountain accommodation and organised logistics throughout. With transport, meals and equipment included, you can focus fully on enjoying the mountain scenery and crisp winter atmosphere without worrying about planning or navigation.
Winter conditions in the mountains can change quickly, which is why experienced local guidance makes such a difference during snowshoeing adventures. Careful route planning, smaller private experiences and knowledge of the terrain help create a safer and far more enjoyable trip for both first-time snowshoers and experienced outdoor travellers.
Rather than rushing between locations, the experience focuses on enjoying the slower pace of winter mountain travel. Snow-covered forests, quiet trails and panoramic viewpoints create a memorable atmosphere that feels completely different from hiking during the warmer months.
After meeting your guide and setting off from Sofia, the journey heads towards the snow-covered landscapes of Vitosha Mountain. Once equipped with snowshoes and poles, you’ll begin trekking through forest trails and winter terrain while learning how to move comfortably across snowy ground.
Throughout the day, the route passes through peaceful woodland scenery with regular stops to enjoy the mountain surroundings and take photos. As the afternoon continues, you’ll arrive at the overnight accommodation where a warm dinner and relaxed evening in the mountains await.
Following breakfast, the second day continues deeper into the winter scenery of Vitosha. Depending on snow conditions and the pace of the group, the guide may choose routes featuring open viewpoints, forest sections and quieter mountain trails away from busier areas.
The slower pace of snowshoeing allows plenty of time to enjoy the landscapes and experience the calm atmosphere of the mountains during winter. After completing the day’s trek, transport returns you comfortably back towards Sofia.
One overnight stay is included during the experience, allowing you to spend more time in the mountains rather than returning directly to the city. The accommodation provides a warm and comfortable place to relax after a full day outdoors in the snow.
Dinner on the first evening and breakfast on the second morning are included as part of the stay. The mountain setting adds to the overall atmosphere of the trip, making the experience feel far more immersive than a standard day tour.
No previous snowshoeing experience is required to enjoy the trip. Your guide explains how to use the snowshoes and poles before setting off, and the pace is adjusted to suit the group throughout the experience.
Snowshoeing is generally easier to learn than many other winter mountain activities, making it a great introduction to exploring snowy terrain.
The experience is rated as moderate due to the winter terrain and time spent walking in snowy mountain conditions. You should feel comfortable being active outdoors for several hours each day.
The guide chooses suitable routes depending on snow conditions, weather and the overall pace of the group to help keep the experience enjoyable and manageable.
Vitosha Mountain offers snow-covered forests, mountain trails and panoramic winter viewpoints throughout the colder months. Depending on conditions, you may also cross open snowy sections with wide views across the surrounding landscapes.
The peaceful atmosphere created by the snow and quieter winter trails makes the scenery feel especially memorable during the trip.
Yes, snowshoes and trekking poles are included as part of the experience. The equipment is prepared before the trek begins to help keep you comfortable while moving across snowy terrain.
You only need to bring suitable winter clothing and footwear for the conditions.
Dinner on the first evening and breakfast on the second morning are included with the overnight accommodation. Additional meals, snacks and drinks outside of these are not included.
Bringing small snacks for the daytime trekking sections is recommended, especially during colder weather.
Warm waterproof mountain clothing is essential for the experience. Thermal layers, gloves, hats and waterproof hiking boots help keep you comfortable during long periods outdoors in snowy conditions.
Mountain weather can change quickly, so dressing in layers is strongly recommended throughout the trip.
Yes, one overnight stay in mountain accommodation is included as part of the tour. Staying overnight allows you to experience the atmosphere of the mountains during winter rather than rushing back to Sofia immediately after trekking.
The accommodation also includes dinner and breakfast, helping create a more relaxed and immersive mountain experience overall.
Children can join provided they are comfortable walking outdoors in winter conditions and are accompanied by an adult. Parents should consider the moderate difficulty level and colder mountain environment before booking for younger children.
Because the experience is private, the pace can remain flexible depending on the group’s confidence and experience.
